Mrs. Baker's Newsletter
September 21, 2017
What is going on?
Writing: We will continue to prewrite and draft personal narratives with a beginning, middle, and end. Students will be encouraged to write about something that happened that gave them a strong feeling.
Spelling and Grammar: about, could, many, out, some, that, them, when
This we will learn a few of the rules for changing a noun from the singular form to the plural form. (y to ies, adding s, when to add es)
Reading: In Reader’s Workshop, we will be looking at strategies that help us to have strong comprehension. Our focal point will be inferring. We are going to be using background knowledge and text clues to make an inference. This will help students better understand what they are reading.
Math: Students will learn many addition solving strategies over the next two weeks. From those strategies, students will choose the few that fit them best to complete word problems. Continue practicing math facts at home, they really help during this 2 digit addition unit!
Science: Students will demonstrate what can be done to materials to change their physical properties such as cutting, folding and sanding. We will have a little Origami fun, and even learn a little about the history of Origami. We will also combine materials to make a structure.
Thank you very very much for the supplies! I really appreciate it! This makes science come alive for our kids! Please let me know if you can help for next week.
Science Supplies Needed:
Sand Paper (Louk Family)
Playdough red, yellow, blue (The Jardine Family) (Louk Family)
Pipe Cleaners- (The Chang Family)
This and That...
We have an assembly tomorrow. Please have kids drop off their backpacks on the porch and go straight to the cafeteria. Thanks so much for reminding your child in the morning.
Class T-shirt order forms are due tomorrow. Please send cash and the shirts usually run small, so order a size up. The kids can grow into it this year. I will be collecting the money and the sizes and our wonderful room mother's will order our shirts for us.
Raz Kids- If your child was a Stallion last year, I pulled over their account from last year to my account. The last year password should work. I set up new accounts for our new students. Everyone should be all set.
My code is Cbaker33
Hurricane Harvey- Our school is collecting new school supplies for a school in the Houston area that was affected by flooding. If you have it in your heart, send in supplies the next few weeks for the elementary school that we have adopted.
Our Sommer staff, is catering a luncheon for the Houston teachers this Friday to share the love. We cannot imagine what they are going through.
Our kids will be taking a standardized IQ test October 4th and 5th. It used to be called the Olsat, but it is now called the Cosat test. If you could send in head phones before this date. The ear buds that came in their school supplies do not fit in the kids ears well. I don't want them missing directions or fiddling with the ear buds. I would like them focused on the test. I know this is another expense, but we will put them to good use this year. Thank you for considering.
