Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain and is now controlled by the United States. In result of being controlled by the U.S., Puerto Rico has not gained independence.

Physical Features
This tropical island is vastly covered with mountains which takes up about 60% of the island. The Cordillera Central mountain chain extends across the interior of Puerto Rico. The longest river in Puerto Rico is Grande de Arecibo stretching to the northern coast. The island's coastal lowlands extend 8-12 miles inward north and 2-8 miles south.
