Character & Character Education

Character, as defined by Marvin Berkowitz (2009), is a "set of psychological characteristics that motivate and enable individuals to function as competent moral agents".

Character education, in contrast is explained by Marvin Berkowitz (2009), "as intentional strategies within schools to foster children's capacities and motivations to act as moral agents" (Seider, 2015, p. 15).


Throughout the Contemporary Issues course at WSR the character of students will be addressed in a variety of ways in order to enhance students' moral, performance and civic character. Each of these elements of character will "contribute positively to the lives of others" (Character Education Partnership, 2008).


The Contemporary Issues course will focus on the curriculum, but will also include learning opportunities in each "cognitive, affective and behavioral components of character" (Seider, 2015, p. 35). There will be opportunities for understanding perspectives, maintaining a positive attitude and continuing to work hard throughout the course.

What is Moral Character?

Lickona and Davidson (2005) state that building moral character in a school setting allows students, teachers, leaders and community members to instill "qualities - such as integrity, justice, caring and respect - needed for successful interpersonal relationships and ethical behavior" (as cited in Seider, 2015, p. 32).

What is Performance Character?

Lickona and Davidson (2005) found that in a school setting, students engage in the learning process, however throughout this process students work and performance will include "qualities such as effort, diligence, perseverance, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, ingenuity, and self-discipline needed to realize one's potential for excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, the work-place, or any other area or endeavor" (as cited in Seider, 2015, p. 32).

What is Civic Character?

At Waverly Shell Rock High School we strive to create "the knowledge, skills, virtues and commitments necessary for engaged and responsible" citizens (Seider, 2012, p. 32). In Contemporary Issues, we will focus on current events and issues relating to technology, economics, politics, society and the environment. By understanding contemporary issues a student will begin to understand the concept of philanthropy and be motivated to "give their time, talent, or treasure and takes action for the sake of other" (Seider, 2012, p. 16).
