Visit from a celebrity!

An Advanced Placement College Board celebrity that is. Thank you to Susan Frediani for inviting Mr. Trevor Packer, VP of the nationwide Advanced Placement program. He visited our high schools and spoke with teachers and students and shared that PUSD has defied stereotypes of rural schools. Look for a larger feature story on social media about his visit.

Modified Block pilot

As we continue to focus on our District Wide High 5’s and site-based non-negotiables, we will be piloting a modified block on two occasions this year at CJSHS, QJSHS and PJSHS (GJSHS is already on a modified block)

October 23rd and 24th

March 5th and 6th

There are many different variations of block scheduling- PUSD will be piloting a “Modified Block” schedule where two days out of the week will be longer class periods (90 minutes). One class, 5th period, will not be blocked and will remain on the traditional 50-minute period.

Benefits of a modified block schedule include:

 Teachers see fewer students during the day, giving them more time for individualized instruction

 With the increased span of teaching time, longer cooperative learning activities can be completed in one class period

 Students have more time for reflection and less information to process over the course of a school day

 Teachers have extended time for planning

 Additional time for labs and outdoor learning

 Fewer classes to focus on in a single day for students and teachers

 Increased instructional minutes due to reduced passing time

 Daily tutorial period remains in schedule

 Relationships: teachers interact with fewer students each day;

students interact with fewer teachers each day.

Challenges of a modified block schedule include:

 Teachers may need professional development and initial support for teaching in the block

 Does not allow for daily instruction

 Teacher prep period is every other day

 Teachers see students only three to four days a week which fosters a lack of continuity from day to day

 If a student misses a day under the modular schedule, that student is actually missing two days

 Three different bell schedules can be confusing (Mon, Tue/Wed, Thur/Fri)

Due to site based differences, please see your Principal for the specific schedule.
