# Slice of the Pi

## January Edition

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.

## 2020

We are back- just in time for our first Friday of the year!

I know many of us revisit and reestablish classroom norms and routines on return from winter break. An additional routine you may want to implement is 3 Reads from Fostering Math Practices, by Amy Lucenta, Grace Kelemanik, and Susan Janssen Creighton, authors of Routines For Reasoning.

The 3 Reads instructional routine is designed to develop students’ ability to make sense of problems by deconstructing the process of reading mathematical situations. Over time, students will internalize this process, thereby creating a heuristic for reading and making sense of mathematical story problems.

Free on the website is also a planner, a student notetaker, and a slide show. If you are interested in learning more about this instructional routine to support the first math practice, or others, reach out!

## If You Build It...

Check out this article about Building Thinking Classrooms. One hot topic right now related to Peter Liljedahl's work is vertical non permanent surfaces. I've been experimenting with just using chart paper and white boards (although these Wipebooks are cool if you have PTO money!) to get kids up and talking. The feedback from teachers who are trying it is that quality of conversation is improved! Give it a try!

## Dear Family,

Are you looking for a resource to share with families that can explain the various models used in Bridges? I've added a copy of this document that shares the models at each grade level, a picture, and the how and why the model is used to the Elementary Math Curriculum Folder in your Drive. If you need additional materials for families, or for me to attend any parent meetings, let me know!

## IAB Reminder

This coming week is our next opportunity to give a common math IAB across the district.

Grade 3- Number and Operations: Fractions

Grade 4- Fractions and Decimal Notation

Please select TEST THREE as the reason for the assessment. If you have any questions with how to administer, or want to analyze data together, you know what to do! We have one more in February and then SBAC is right around the corner!

SBAC Dates:

• 5/12-5/14 Math 5

• 5/19-5/21 Math 4

• 5/26-5/28 Math 3
