Reopening Plan for Vista Classic Students

This past Tuesday, the VUSD School Board met and decided to stick to the original plan to reopen all VUSD schools for Vista Classic students beginning October 20th. This plan is contingent upon the status of our County's health orders - namely staying out of the "purple tier".

MVHS staff and faculty are working to finalize logistics and safety measures that will be in place to make our campus as safe as we reasonably can for students and staff. Additional details about our safety policies and procedures for students and staff on campus will be released as we get closer to the 20th.

Back to School Night

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us virtually on Thursday for our Virtual Back to School Night. We recognize that parents are our partners in education, and it was great to have so many participate with us.

If you have not already had a chance to do so, please check out your teachers' welcome videos in this document.

Progress Reports Come Out Next Week

It's hard to believe that we are already at the first progress notice for the school year. Teachers will submit grades to Aeries by Thursday of next week.

Parents and students will be able to view the grades online in the Parent Portal.

Student Grades in Canvas and Aeries

Grade Integration for Canvas and Aeries - We had hoped that we would be able to integrate grades through Canvas and Aeries, meaning that a teacher could enter those grades into Canvas, and they would be automatically integrated into the teacher’s Aeries gradebook and show up on Parent Portal. Unfortunately, after many hours of IT and individual teachers working through this, we have been unable to make this integration work. Our District is in contact with Canvas IT and we continue to work toward a solution.

Where Can I See My Grades? - Right now, many teachers are keeping gradebooks in Canvas, while some are keeping track in the Parent/Student Portal. Parents are able to "pair" with their student using a unique code to track progress in Canvas. See this video for instructions for pairing with a student.

Supporting the Social-emotional Needs of our Students

The Counseling Department is here to help support students and families. Our top priority is the health, safety, and well-being of every MVHS student and family.

Should you have a concern about an MVHS student or if you, as an MVHS student, would like to refer yourself, please complete this form. The Counseling Dept. will make sure to follow up with any students and/or their families to make sure we are providing the needed assistance.

Please note that these responses are checked during designated school days and it may take 1-3 days to follow up with a student and/or family.

Should you feel that you need immediate non-life-threatening support please contact the Access and Crisis Line at 888.724.7240 or if you need life-threatening support please call Emergency Services at 911.

PSAT

Traditionally, MVHS hosts a PSAT session in October for interested students in grades 10-11 to gauge their progress and preparedness for high-stakes college entrance exams like the SAT. We typically have 350-400 students take the exam in a single session and location (gym). Unfortunately, the current health orders and social distancing guidance make holding the PSAT on-site in October impractical.

However, the CollegeBoard is offering alternative test dates later in the year. We are looking at a January test date, and if we are able to safely host this opportunity at that time, we will. Please watch for additional communication about the PSAT as we get closer to Winter Break.

Students are expected to participate in class every day. For videoconference calls, students are strongly encouraged to use their video feature as it adds to classroom culture, engagement, and general learning.

MVHS Online Ettiquette:

  • Be friendly, patient, and positive
  • Have a designated area to complete your schoolwork
  • Keep your computer fully charged
  • Consider what's in your background when you are participating in a videoconference call
  • Make sure everyone gets a chance to participate in the lesson
  • Make an effort to keep your video on so everyone can see you
  • Use school-appropriate language
  • Dress in school-appropriate clothing

Attendance Matters: Expectations for Students

  • Be on time for synchrounous learning
  • Turn your camera on
  • Notify your teacher of any reason you're unable to participate
  • Be ready to engage
  • Be respectful and appropriate
Students are expected to engage every day with each of their classes. Our teachers will be taking attendance every period, every day. Students who are not engaging with their classes online will be marked absent.
