Karen Pitts, Media Specialist

November 7, 2022

Students from Mrs. Lake's 7th and 8th grade ELA classes visited the library media center on Halloween to participate in a mystery/suspense activity. We talked about a variety of authors and books from this genre and students were invited to participate in musical chairs with books. During this activity, they spent time browsing a variety of books and rated each book based on several criteria. Many of the students checked out a spooky or suspenseful read before they left.

Book Fair Reminder

Our first Scholastic Book Fair of the year will be November 11-18 in the library media center at Madras Middle school. Our theme for this fair will be, "Reading is our SUPERPOWER!" Friday, November 11 will be a dress up day to kick off the fair. Students are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero shirt or costume (school dress code applies).

Parent volunteers are needed to help us set up and run the fair. Click the sign up link below if you are interested in helping during the fair.

Additionally, we are charging tax at the fair this year. This is the first time that we have had to charge tax, so this will be a change for the students. Please let your student know this information. You can also shop online and you can create an ewallet for your student in advance so that they don't have to bring cash with them to shop. Please use the link below to access the online shopping and ewallet features.

Thank you so much for your support of our Scholastic Book Fair!

Thanking Our Veterans

This week, we will take time to celebrate our military through Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a day to honor and thank everyone who has protected our country’s peace and freedom by serving in the military. Let’s learn a few facts about our Veterans today.

  • There are around 19 million US veterans
  • Almost 2 million US veterans are women
  • The median age of veterans is 65
  • In Georgia, there are around 697,000 veterans
  • There are around 1,880 Veterans living in Newnan

Do you have a friend or family member that has served in the military? How will you thank them today?

In honor of Veterans Day, Madras Middle School would like to recognize the courageous men and women of our community who have served in the Armed Forces. We would like to honor any veterans in your family by inviting them to be our guests at our school’s Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 10th, at 9:00 a.m.

Veterans are invited to come early (anytime between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.) for a Veterans' Meet and Greet in our media center. A light breakfast will be served.

Guests and families who may be accompanying veterans will be seated in the gym in designated chairs on the gym floor. Our veterans will be escorted from the media center to the gym promptly at 9:00 a.m. in a processional to begin the assembly.

We are looking forward to honoring those who have given so much. We are grateful for their service.

Annual Can-a-Thon: Let's Can Hunger, Eagles!

It is that time again! Madras is partnering up with the Newnan Junior Service League to help collect cans and non perishable food items to help stock the Coweta Community Food Pantry. This is a very important cause the helps feed families in need, not only for the holidays - but for the entire year. Starting now, students and staff can bring in cans and/or money donations to the homeroom teacher. Each dollar donated equals 3 cans. Let’s show our compassion and empathy as we all work together to CAN hunger in Coweta County.

PTSO Donations

Madras PTSO has been so very grateful for the support from many families over the years. Throughout the year, we will share opportunities to support our students and staff directly with specific item requests or special treats. Between families helping fulfill those requests and direct donations in the methods listed below, we have been able to avoid large scale fundraising.

In addition to cash or check donation and membership, Madras PTSO is able to take electronic payments:

Does your company offer charitable matching for donations to nonprofits or schools? Delta matching for education is back. Check with your HR department if your company has matching.

Additionally, any group, business or company wishing to advertise with Madras, we offer sponsorship banner opportunities via our car rider line. Reach out to madrasmsptso@gmail.com for more info on how you can become one of our sponsors. Don't forget we can transfer a banner from a previous school for a discount.

Thank you for supporting Madras PTSO!

Important Notice Regarding Free and Reduced Meals

Parents, CCSS enjoyed serving all of our students breakfast and lunch at no-cost this year, but current guidance from USDA does not allow us to serve free meals to all students in the 2022-2023 School Year.

It is encouraged that you fill out our online free and reduced meal application for your family. Any free or reduced meal application completed in the 2021-2022 School Year that is given an eligibility of free or reduced will carryover into the 2022-2023 School Year for the first 30 days of school or until a new application is processed (whichever occurs first).

You can easily complete the application at our website: https://frapps.horizonsolana.com/COWC01

Dropping Off Items for Your Child During the School Day

Dropping off Lunches or Medication: If a student forgets a lunch at home, parents may drop it off at the front office, and students will be called to pick up their lunch at the beginning of their scheduled lunch time. If a student needs medication, it can be dropped off at any time for the school nurse.

Dropping off Other Items:

Any other item dropped off for students during the school day may be picked up after school. Instruction will not be interrupted for students to pick up items during class. This includes forgotten homework, Chromebooks, shoes for PE, projects, etc. Students are responsible for bringing needed materials to class daily. If these items are brought to school during the day, we are happy to make an announcement at the end of the day for your child to pick them up in the front office.

Big picture

Student Cellphones and Electronics

Cell phones and Smartwatches may not be used during the instructional day and must be turned off and put away at all times. Students are permitted to use a phone in the front office during school hours for emergencies or for illness. Students should not use a cell phone or smartwatch to call home or text when sick. Any student who is ill should go through the Madras clinic. The school nurse will call parents directly. Calling home for homework, a school project, or to make arrangements to attend an after school event that wasn't previously arranged ties up phone lines and is not permitted. Students may call home if:

  1. There is a transportation issue,
  2. Lunch or lunch money is needed,
  3. There is a dress code issue.
  4. The student is sick or needs medication (must call from the clinic under the nurse's supervision).

We appreciate your help in keeping interruptions to a minimum.

Monitoring Progress, Grades, Assignments, and Attendance

Student Portal

Students will be assigned a login for Student Portal which will allow them to regularly monitor their grades and assignments. Once logged on the first time, they will be prompted to change their password. Students should keep this in a secure location and should never share the password with others.

Parent Portal

Parent Portal provides access for parents to view students' attendance, grades, schedules, lunch balances, and other useful information. It also allows teachers to communicate with parents via the portal. You can enroll HERE, (directions) If you have questions about your portal account or are having trouble logging in, please contact Student Information Services by emailing infinitecampusportal@cowetaschools.net.

Big picture

Chromebook Reminder

Please remind your student to bring his/her fully charged Chromebook to school each day. The school has limited loaners to give students whose computers are being repaired, but there aren't enough Chromebooks to lend students who forget to bring theirs each day. Regular routines in preparing for each day can help students remember to pack needed instructional supplies daily.

Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies Program of Georgia provides nourishment on weekends and holidays when school is not in session and students do not have access to breakfast or lunch provided by the school system. If you would like to sign up for Backpack Buddies, scan the QR code provided or click the following link. Food will be distributed every Friday for your child to bring home for the weekend. If you have multiple children, you can sign up for all students at one time.
