Hughes Happenings

Principal's Message
Greetings Hughes Families,
This is going to be a busy week! The week before Thanksgiving break is always one of my favorite weeks with our special lunches! This is a long time standing tradition in Prosper ISD and I can remember when my mom was able to come have lunch with my children back when they were in elementary school. It is a special memory, even if you do no have grandparents near here or any special family members. And if you cannot join your child this week, that is ok too, we always make it a fun and memorable time for all of our students!
To make this a successful week, please take the time to read about some changes for this week.
Giving Tree for Staff: Our PTO is asking for $10 gift cards or donations for our staff giving tree so that every single staff member receives a $10 gift card before we go on our break. If you can donate that would amazing. You can drop off your donation in the front office to the red PTO box. We are still needing quite a few more! Thank you!
**PLEASE READ: Grandparents and Special Friends Day FAST PASS: The Fast Pass link to RSVP for our Grandparents and Special Friends Lunches is still open and will be open until the end of the day Monday, November 13th. After this time, the link will close and you will have to come in and have your license scanned in the office, instead of picking up an already printed badge. This Fast Pass makes it much easier and faster for you to come have your special lunch. More information can be found inside the Fast Pass link.
The schedule for lunches for each grade level is below. Last week, we had some of the grade levels mixed up so please follow this schedule. I apologize for the confusion!
Wednesday, November 15th: 10:30-11:15 a.m. KINDERGARTEN and 11:30-12:15 p.m. 2nd GRADE
Thursday, November 16th: 10:30-11:15 a.m. 1st GRADE and 11:30-12:15pm 5th GRADE
Friday, November 17th: 10:30-11:15 am 3rd GRADE and 11:30-12:15 pm 4th GRADE
**NO LUNCH DROP OFFS WILL BE EXCEPTED, WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY this WEEK!**. Due to the special lunch days, we will not be able to monitor the drop off area in our front foyer. That means no water bottles, lunches, Chromebooks, etc. are allowed to be dropped off. Thank you for your understanding.
Spirit Sticks: PTO will be selling spirit sticks at every special lunch this week, Wednesday-Friday! Make sure to stop by the spirit stick table and get some! There are some new and fun ones! Check them out! They are only $1.00 and our students LOVE to put them on their backpacks!
Volunteer to help cover lunch duty for teachers! Our PTO has put together an opportunity to help one Friday of each month to cover lunch duty for our teachers so that they can spend some time together as a team. It would be each Friday we have a Hughes Huddle Assembly. If you are interested, please sign up here. You must have a cleared volunteer background check and you will need to sign a confidentially agreement. We have already had our first lunch covered last Friday and we really appreciated it!
Lunch sign up: Please remember that you need to sign up to come have lunch with your children. We ask that you only do this once a week. The link is on the website under Hughes Announcements, and also here. Thank you!

COGAT Testing 2nd and 4th Grades
Prosper ISD will be administering the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to second and fourth grade students district-wide during the weeks of November 28th-December 8th. The CogAT is a norm-referenced test that evaluates the level and pattern of cognitive development of students, as well as their abilities in problem-solving using verbal, quantitative, and spatial (nonverbal) reasoning. CogAT result information is used by teachers to better understand a student’s ability in relationship to his or her achievement and guide efforts to adapt instruction to the needs of the students.
The information gathered will not be used for grade calculations. This type of assessment gives parents and educators insight into their student’s innate reasoning skills. There is no need to “study” or prepare for this assessment.
Parents will have access to student scores after January 5th, 2024.
Hughes Heart -
At Hughes, we show our hearts each and every day. Our heart for learning and for each other.
Is it safe? Is it Responsible? Would it be okay if everyone did it?
Safety is important for we have a space to learn and grow. I often tell students this includes our minds, our words, and our physical space.
We continue to support students in problem-solving safely, when disagreements occur with a peer, a big feeling comes along, or sometimes our day just doesn't go our way. Please continue to support us in reminding kids, that it is okay to feel mad, sad, disappointed, and confused; but we have to be safe.
We utilize many tools to teach regulation first to students and empower them to problem solve. It is okay to disagree it is never okay to be unsafe.
If we feel mad some tools you could ask your student about are:
- Breathing strategies
- Who is their trusted adult at school?
- Peace path or triangle talk
- Maybe even a tool in their calm-down corners.
We have very exciting days ahead to end the 2023. I know each student can meet Hughes expectations to participate in a safe way.

We appreciate your continued partnership in making our school have heart.
