Academic and Career Planning at WHS
As we all start to settle in here for the 2018-19 school year at Wrightstown High, it is our goal to keep Academic and Career Planning (ACP) as a top priority. As a reminder, ACP was introduced by the Department of Public Instruction in order to ensure that all students in grades 6-12 are provided academic and career planning services. It is our hope that when students graduate from WHS, they have had some time to self-explore, consider their options, develop a plan, and then dive in after graduation. We understand that high school students often times dread the question of, “want do you want to be when you grow up”. To be honest, I didn’t know what I was going to do as a career when I graduated from UWGB with my double major in Psychology and Human Development. It wasn’t until the semester before graduation that I started to really consider picturing myself in different careers. I did know that I loved working with and helping people, I was organized and timely, I wanted to work inside, and I enjoyed working with children/adolescents. There were no jobs available that were appealing to me for a variety of reasons, so I decided to continue my education. My undergraduate degree was a great choice based on what I knew about myself and did a great job prepping me for my masters program. However, I have to be honest, none of that was planned based on the fact that I would be a school counselor in the end. But, as a result of taking the time to consider my likes and dislikes, my strengths and weaknesses, and my personality, and matching that up with a major and then ultimately a career, I believe I’ve found the perfect fit for me! I continue to tell students, if you put in the front work, and cover your bases, things are likely to work out well in the end. Therefore, I don’t expect our students to “know what they want to be when they grow up”, but I do want to help our students begin to recognize and consider:
*Who am I?
*What am I good at and what do I enjoy?
*How do I link my strengths, abilities & values to a career?
*What are my post high school options and what do I need to do to get there?
*And in the end: how can these things be tied to my future career?
In order to assist our students in answering these questions, they all have access to our career development software called Career Cruising. All students should have their usernames and passwords. Please encourage your student to log in and look over the website together. If your student forgot or misplaced their log-in information encourage them to stop in the counseling office, or send us an email.
As parents/guardians, we also want you involved in this process. Parent codes are now available upon request. Please email us at kabat@wrightstown.k12.wi.us or olson@wrightstown.k12.wi.us.
One Act Play: ASYLUM

One Act Play: ASYLUM
The cast and crew of this year’s one-act play, Asylum, will take the stage on Tuesday, November 13 at 7pm and Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 7pm in the Wrightstown High School auditorium. Set in a state-run mental institution and, at times, in the minds of the patients, Asylum explores the flipside of sanity. Through a tapestry of monologues that range from off-the-wall to terrifying, the characters search for their refuge, their shelter, their sanctuary...their home. Tickets are $5 and are available at the ticket window 30 minutes prior to showtime. Doors open at 6:30pm. (This show has a PG-13 rating and may not be suitable for young children).

National Honor Society
The fall 2018 applicants experienced the new and improved application process, and the advisors want to make the process more transparent for those eligible to apply in the fall of 2019 (those with a 3.6 cumulative GPA following an academic year). One component and change, which was optional this year but will be a requirement starting in the fall of 2019, is that applicants must be able to verify 10 hours of community service completed in the past 12 months. Applicants must also demonstrate ACTIVE involvement in a minimum of 2 activities (in or outside of school) with verification of involvement from advisors. Finally, one other significant change is that applicants have to be able to demonstrate their leadership (might be as captain of a sport, but can also be assuming responsibility within a club or even a classroom) and have that verified. Abiding by national policy, the applications will be reviewed by an anonymous faculty council to determine which students best fulfill all four pillars of scholarship, service, character, and leadership. Advisors hope to have the applications ready for the 2019 eligible applicants by the August orientation night.

SELF-DEFENSE STRATEGIES
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH

WELLNESS CENTER CLASSROOM
Winning Mindset for Personal Protection
Self-defense trainers speak often of having a defensive mindset; that your brain is your best defensive tool for keeping you out of trouble. Being aware of our surroundings helps us identify dangers and possibly avoid those dangers. Similarly, being distracted and unprepared is far more likely to attract predators. Awareness of what is around you is where your self-defense begins. This awareness of potential danger is something we have to train and cultivate, especially as our world becomes more complex.
Greg Deike, Self-Defense and TaeKwonDo instructor, will be here from 8:30-9:30AM on Saturday, November 17th to speak on this very important message on self-defense strategies. This presentation is geared toward high school students and older, and females of all age groups are highly encouraged to attend.
Advance registration is required. Please email wellnesscenter@wrightstown.k12.wi.us or call 920-532-0314x6700 to register.

Sophomore Planning Conferences
Sophomore Planning Conferences have begun! Although these meetings are called “planning conferences” I really believe they fit more into the Explore stage of the Academic and Career Planning process. During these sophomore planning conferences, we will meet with groups of students and take some time reviewing their transcripts, entering information into their career cruising accounts, exploring the career clusters they were matched with from their matchmaker assessment and more. We go through the common post high school options: World of work, Military, 4-year university, 2 year technical schools, Transfer Schools and Apprenticeships. It is our hope that as we expose the students to their options and have these conversations, they can start to see a connection between what they are doing presently in school to what they hope to be doing in the future. These meetings will be scheduled during your student's study hall.
