Please Stop Laughing At Me

By Caleigh Duesing

Jodee Blanco just wanted to be treated like any other kid throughout her school years. Instead she was bullied and treated horribly by the students and even adults. She started getting bullied when she was just in elementary . After moving to a different school things were better but eventually got bad again.”What a desperate, pathetic fool I was. Time after time, my "friends" had shown me their true colors. Yet, I still wanted to believe they were sorry for causing me pain.”pg. 128 Jodee said. She went on to keep getting bullied and eventually hating herself. Jodee is now invited to a high school reunion and is scared of what will happen.

Jodee Blanco

Jodee is bullied throughout her school years but is very strong. At some points she is emotionally drained and hates herself for what is happening to her but never gives up. Jodee is very caring for people and just wants people to be her friend like everyone else does. She also have a very caring family but at points her parents don’t understand what is actually going on. “My grandmother and aunts might have been my anchors, but my dad was my wings” pg.22 Jodee said. After school and the bullying ends Jodee goes on to be successful and finally is free of people bullying and judging her.

The conflict in Please Stop Laughing At Me would be both Character vs. Society and Character vs. Self. Character vs. Society is because Jodee is bullied for years never getting a break by her peers and has no way to stop it. At one point when she was being bullied in middle school the kids who used to be her friends drag her out to the parking lot and beat her up. “They grabbed my hands and feet and dragged me across the parking lot behind the main campus chanting, ‘We're going to kill you’” pg.67. Jodee also had a conflict with herself, Character vs. Self. Jodee at points hated herself and would physically harm herself think it was her fault no one liked her. After everything was over and she went onto her life after school everything got better. She goes to her high school reunion and is scared of what people will remember or what they will say. Everyone forgets what happened and Jodee only ends up making friends with everyone.

The theme of the book Please Stop Laughing At Me would be, things can get better even if it doesn’t seem like it. This would be the theme because while Jodee is in school it seems as if nothing is ever going to get better. Jodee is constantly harassed by everyone and wants to give up at points. Jodee never gave up completely and everything did end up working out for her. When school was over she went on to create a life for herself and be successful. Everything did work out for Jodee and it inspires people to not give up and just try to weather the storm as strongly as you can.

Textual Evidence

A part of the book that stood out to me was when Jodee couldn’t take it and wanted revenge on everyone that was bullying her. “I want to kill them, like they’re killing me” pg. 164. Jodee was at the point where the bullying was mentally and emotionally killing her. She wanted them to feel how she felt when they were bullying and harassing her.Jodee just all together wanted everything to stop and just wanted them to feel what she felt.

Book Review

I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. The book is tells a very powerful story about bullying and encourages people to get through it. This book just didn’t interest me very much because I can’t connect to it very well. Overall the book is very well written and I would suggest this book to people.
