Dear Families,

At GES and Lake, we pride ourselves in creating a school environment "Where Kids Go To Grow." Academic growth is our priority, but no our sole priority. We strive to provide students with opportunities that help them grow in confidence and give them lifelong tools that extend beyond "reading, writing, and arithmetic." This time of year, our students start some really wonderful activities. Preschool, Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades are swimming, thanks to our partners with the City of Gunnison Recreation Center. Third Grade will soon begin their Nordic Skiing, while our Fourth and Fifth Graders will hit the slopes at CBMR. To think about the broad scope of these programs, it's staggering to think that, if a child attends Lake and GES from PK3 to 5th Grade, he or she will receive up to 16 swim lessons with Red Cross certified instructors, 2 Nordic Ski Lessons (including a hut trip), and 8 downhill ski lessons with CBMR instructors. We live in an incredible community and I'm grateful that we have such tremendous partners who ensure that education opportunities are second-to-none.

Counselor's Corner

Happy Friday! Let’s talk gratitude! I guarantee I’ve mentioned this before, but I know it bears repeating: gratitude can change your life! According to Emily Fletcher when we express or experience gratitude our brain releases dopamine and serotonin - two molecules responsible for making us feel good. When we practice gratitude we build those neural pathways. Meaning, when we do good we feel good and when we feel good we do good. Not only that but studies from Moll, Zahn, et al. 2007 show that practicing gratitude can release toxic emotions, reduce pain, enhance sleep quality and even reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Building gratitude can be as easy as journaling one thing you are grateful for everyday and can go as far as paying it forward and doing something kind for someone else. No matter what you choose, choose gratitude, choose kind, and choose to make our community even happier!
