Anglo European School
Bulletin for w/c 5th February 2024 - Week 2
This week, Mrs Gee had the great pleasure of interviewing prospective candidates for Head student positions. It was fabulous to see so many Sixth Form students applying to be part of the leadership team of the school. Student Voice, via our Student Committees, is a key influencer in the strategic development of the school. This week, the Student Committees have fed back via video messages to all tutor groups about the progress they have made on their strategic targets that they set out to achieve at the beginning of the year. Much of this work is led and promoted by the Head Students who lead and guide these committees and advocate for student priorities with school leaders.
The prospective student leaders presented on a number of key topics which reflect important elements of our school development plan. We discussed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and, in particular, how we promote equality of opportunity for all students and how we eradicate racism from schools. Educating students and staff about Harmful Sexual Behaviour, student bulletins and communications, debating society, international Music and Dance, fundraising opportunities, gym equipment, revision breakfasts for Year 11, peer tutoring and choreography clubs were amongst the innovative and exciting ideas that our new leadership team are promoting as part of the hustings and promotional campaigns this year. It was simply a joy to listen to how much these young leaders love and value their school, want to commit their time to enhancing the provision for students and have the most incredible leadership potential to make all this happen in the year ahead. The candidates are now creating videos to share with all students, outlining their manifestos and leadership campaigns.
All students and staff will have a vote, deciding who will be our new Head Students for 2024. All those who apply and others who want to engage in leadership of specific areas will be leading the work of Committees in the new year. We are so proud of these students for putting their heads above the parapet and standing apart from peers to be agents of change in our school.
Year 11 World of Work Day
Year 11 students took part in our annual World of Work day on Friday 26th January. Students were encouraged to think and talk about their options after GCSEs and their future career pathway. The students participated in a range of seminars with entrepreneurs and then sat mock interviews with real employers. The day ended with students meeting Anglo Alumni who spoke about how they took advantage of the opportunities whilst at AES to accelerate their careers goals. They thoroughly enjoyed these invaluable experiences that will help prepare them for the year ahead.
One student commented: "The interviews were really useful as I have never had that experience before." Another said " Having multiple interviews with real employers has given me confidence. The first interview I had I was really nervous, but I was much more confident for the second one."
One professional said: "Thank you for hosting a fantastic day. I was really impressed with the standard of the interviews and CVs that the students completed. A real credit to the school."
STEM
This week we had a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) assembly on Time and we were asked to think about how we quantify time. 10 minutes can feel very long or very short depending on what you are doing and even how old you are. We can never get to the past or the future but we do move though time to get from one moment to the next. Films such as "Inception", "Interstellar" and "The Matrix" all show different people experiencing time at different rates. Flies experience time six times slower than us, which is why it is really hard to swat them! We can all experience a time warp, if we are in a life or death situation time can go slowly to help us escape. Athletes try to slow time down so they can go faster. Our perception of time can also come from the languages we speak.
Hopefully, in the future, we will have a better understanding of time, maybe some of our students will study a STEM subject and help us understand this or other questions.
We are thrilled to announce that Miss Hart has successfully completed her NPQLL (National Professional Qualification in Leading Literacy) with absolute top marks!
Miss Hart is at the very heart of our school's literacy provision. She leads the Thinking Reading programme, supporting students to reach their chronological reading age. In addition to that, she is constantly supporting students in all the little ways which we know help to make their day at school go more smoothly. Huge congratulations to Miss Hart on this amazing achievement.

International Day is fast approaching … Friday 8th March
We would like to encourage as many of our whole school community to take part in this very special day by wearing either their native cultural dress or outfits or by wearing anything related colour wise in support of a country. We look forward every year to this very special day in the school’s calendar, where we embrace the many identities, cultures, languages, ethnicities and religions that make up the Anglo Family.
Parking
Unfortunately the Parish Council has again been receiving a number of complaints from residents on Wadham Close regarding inconsiderate parking by AES parents dropping and collecting their children from our school. As you will be aware, Wadham Close is a small cul de sac and residents have been contacting the school stating that parents are often speeding into the road or park in resident only bays.
We have been asked by the Parish Council to remind parents to please not park in Wadham Close and block residents drives or park in resident only bays. The Parish Council will be contacting the South Essex Parking Partnership to request some enforcement of the parking restrictions which are in place but would prefer if parents did show some consideration when dropping their children at the school rather than go down the route of enforcement.
Many thanks for your support. We would like to work in partnership with our local neighbours and resolve this issue amicably.

"Cinderella"
Congratulations to Grace in Year 7 who recently took part in the pantomime "Cinderella" in Maldon. She has been attending rehearsals every Friday since September and took part in 4 shows in the Town Hall to a full house every night. Her role involved dancing and singing as part of the main chorus for the show, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs Gee gave it an outstanding review!
SPORT
Year 7 Boys' Basketball
Year 7 Girls' Football
The Year 7 girls' football team drew their game against a tough opposition. The team played so well together, putting together lots of passes, keeping possession and whipping in some fabulous crosses and corners. Player of the match went to Lily.
Year 11 Rugby
Year 7 Rugby Tournament
Well done to all the Year 7 boys who took part in their first rugby tournament. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn more about this sport and to compete and develop their skills in a team environment. Many students enjoyed this experience and Mr Richards hopes that this will spark a passion for the game that could last a lifetime.
