Principal's Corner
This week I had a chance to spend a lot of time in all of our classrooms. There is SO much learning happening! I saw students reading, solving challenging math problems, engaging in rich discussions about books, using instruments during music, creating beautiful works of art, playing games in gym, learning through play in 4K and getting their energy out in positive ways during Playworks practice recesses. What a week!
This week I also had the privilege of cheering on our awesome cross country team at their race! Many teachers also showed up to cheer them on. Congratulations to Giavanni, Jordan, Ethan, Sam, Angelina, Madalyn and Juliana for representing Hawthorne LAB School well and completing the race! Great job!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Carly Solberg - Principal

Digital Portfolios!
At Hawthorne LAB, the digital portfolio is the primary way for you to connect to your child’s progress throughout the school year. In addition to containing your child’s continuums of learning in math, reading and writing, the portfolio contains actual pieces of your learner’s work and feedback from teachers. By Oct. 12th, you should have received an invite via email from the site we use to house our portfolios, Fresh Grade. Please accept this invitation and watch the learning unfold throughout the year. If you didn’t get an invite by Monday, October 15th, contact your child’s homeroom teacher to make sure we have the correct email contact for you.

Important Attendance Reporting Procedure
Hawthorne will begin using the procedure outlined in the letter below on Monday October 22nd. As with any new system, we expect that there may be a few issues that arise along the way. If you experience any issues please report them to the contacts listed in the letter below. Here are a few tips that will help make your transition to the new system easier.
1) By far the easiest way to interact with the new system is by downloading the app on your phone and signing up for an account.
2) If you are not an app user and prefer to use your computer signup and login at https://go.schoolmessenger.com/
3) The phone option is still available by calling the attendance line at school. There will be a menu there to transfer your call into the new system. You may however, want to use the direct number 1-866-490-7371. By dialing direct from a phone that is registered with the district, the system should recognize the number you are calling from and be able to quickly identify your children and allow you to confirm their absence.

Hawthorne PTO News and Events!
Movie Night is this Friday, October 19th!
Parents and Guardians,
Please help us by helping your student to follow the movie night expectations:
Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible
At Hawthorne our expectations are to be safe, be respectful and be responsible. This means that during movie night you are sitting to watch the movie, using a quiet voice if you need to talk to someone and using walking feet if you need to get up to buy a snack or use the bathroom. Parents and guardians, please help your child to follow these expectations throughout the entire movie. Students, if you need to get up to purchase a snack or use the bathroom, you need to get permission from your parent or guardian first.
