What has changed since the last program evaluation?
Our student numbers at the primary school have continued to increase. I see 26 classes for 45 minutes over the course of a 4 day rotation. Our building population is nearing 500 students.
Last year proved very challenging. Using the SeeSaw platform during our virtual breaks allowed the Fine Arts team to stay connected to our students.

Southern Boone Elementary Updates
What data/evaluation criteria illustrates the effectiveness of this area?
The program goals of the elementary are to give students an opportunity to create their own work and appreciate the visual arts. We work on developing skills and assessing the role of art in our lives. Students learn 21st century skills such as critical thinking, reflection, and exploring. We utilize a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) setting to meet our goals.
Elementary students participated in the St. Louis Symphony’s Picture the Music art competition. Seven students advanced to be placed into the show in Saint louis from the Elementary. In 2020, two of our students were selected as part of the 100 finalists in the 31st annual Picture the Music competition in which more than 6,000 students from 49 schools created artwork and submitted 300 entries.
We follow the National Core Arts Standards, Artistic Studio Habits of Mind, and the Missouri standards to provide a well rounded curriculum for elementary students. We follow a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) teaching model. Students get to engage with multiple art mediums, including paint, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber arts, drawing and digital arts.
What has changed since the last program evaluation?
Our student numbers at the Elementary school have increased. I now see 23 classes for 50 minutes every four days where previously we had 21 classes. I now have 483 students that I teach and grade for art.
Last year, due to Covid, Specials were required for a few months at the beginning of the year, to push into classrooms with a cart. We also lost the ability to share supplies for the whole year. I wasn’t able to offer as much choice to my students as I normally like with the restrictions and am happy to be back into my own classroom space and sharing supplies again. This allows us to have more access to supplies, storage for our materials and a good transition into the artistic setting.
We have lost our art room iPads due to students getting 1:1 devices. My students now bring their Chromebooks to my class. We use Google Classroom to organize and share all my lessons and their art work throughout the year. It has also allowed me to be able to reach students at their homes.

Southern Boone Middle School Updates
What data/evaluation criteria illustrates the effectiveness of this area?
The Art program goal of the Middle School is to assist students in developing critical thinking by learning material application and technique, tool/material responsibility, craftsmanship, effort, and demonstrating objective focus that aligns with Missouri and National Art Standards. In the Middle School Art Program students are asked to use critical thinking skills to problem solve a variety of real world challenges through a variety of mediums.
Students have shown individual growth by documenting their artworks through personal digital portfolios that they have created and will be able to carry with them through High School. Throughout the semester students reflect upon their progress as a developing artist and conference individually about their strengths/weaknesses and how to further develop life long skills.
What has changed since the last program evaluation?
The Middle School Art Department has gone through big transitions of size and is getting ready to go through a very large transition with taking on ⅓ of the elementary next year as well as serving 400 students during a school year currently. We will grow from 453 to 636, adding an additional 183 students based on current enrollment numbers.
I am currently teaching 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, and Advanced Art. Also, Art Club is thriving by creating a more beautified school. Students have updated many outdated/worn items throughout the school, including, cabinets, bulletin boards, and many empty areas that were in need of student artworks.
Chromebooks have assisted a great deal with allowing students to access rubrics, examples, and materials through Google Classroom. All students have also began their own digital portfolios that will grow with them through Middle School into High School.

Southern Boone High School Updates
What data/evaluation criteria illustrates the effectiveness of this area?
Students have grown in their knowledge and understanding of color theory as shown by the results of my Student Learning Objects. Every student increased their score from the pretest to the post test.
Also, the growth of my program to the point that my classes are filled to capacity shows the success of Visual Arts as so many students want to take the class.

Upcoming Visual Arts Events
Primary: This fall our students will be participating in our Square1 art fundraiser. Each artist will create their own unique piece of art. Square 1 then offers a variety of merchandise including (water bottles, magnets, phone cover etc.) that families can purchase with the students' artwork printed on it. Our school receives 30% of the total sales, which is then used to purchase supplies for the art room. Our students also participate in the Artome art show each spring. This art show provides an opportunity to view each student's original art (matted and framed) during our Parent Teacher Conferences. Families can purchase their students' framed art and take it home that evening. Even during the Pandemic we were able to provide a virtual art show where students' art could be viewed and purchased online. Elementary School: In the Winter, students will participate in Picture the Music, the Saint Louis Symphony inspired art competition. In Spring, students will participate in our fundraiser , Square 1 art. Middle School: The Middle School 7th Grade Art classes traveled to Jefferson City, Missouri on October 7th to the Museum of Modern Art and State Penitentiary in Jefferson City on October 7th to view art exhibits and architecture. This is our second trip in the past two years. They have both been successful trips in revealing real world local artwork and architecture that has made history for the state of Missouri. The Middle School 8th Grade Art and Advanced Art classes will travel to St.Louis, Missouri on October 21st for an immersive art experience called ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ at the St. Louis Galleria where we will get to experience walking through Van Gogh’s paintings as they are projected and given insight by local scholars on Van Gogh’s works. We are thrilled about having the opportunity to view this traveling exhibit that will only be in the state of Missouri for the months of October and November. Art Club will begin meeting every Monday, October 25th from 3:15- 4:15 in the Middle School Art room. Club members create self directed art with a series of different themes and collaborate on school art displays. High School: Art 2 and Advanced Art will take a field trip to attend the Beyond Van Gogh event in St Louis. Van Gogh paintings are projected onto the walls and floor and set into motion, so it feels as if you are in his paintings! Columbia College hosts a high school art show every year. Select students' art will be exhibited. The show is usually in January. Arts and Crafts will be offered as a privilege activity during academic support.
