5th Grade Graduation and Party - DATE CHANGE - Tuesday, June 9th - 9:30am
Parent meeting was held 2/5 to go over 5th grade graduation/celebration party needs. A vote was held to determine date of the celebration and the overwhelming majority voted for Tuesday, June 9th. Please mark your calendars as we will need lots of help from volunteers this date. We are also still looking for volunteers to lead pre-planning for: group games, carnival booth games, and day of photography. Please reach out to Michelle Powell at 734-658-5135 for further information. Remember, bagel day is 2/12 which supports funding for the graduation. If you did not prepay last month, you may send your child with a $1 on Wednesday and we will have extra bagels on hand for purchase.
Keith Announcements
Dragon Safety
Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, Dr. Delgado, our deputy superintendent, has shared information about district-wide efforts to improve our emergency responses. Specifically, our district has adopted an options-based emergency response for potential violent intruder events. Throughout this process, we have collaborated with local law enforcement including staff training and parent informational meetings. This topic is sensitive and critically important; and so we are grateful for our partnership with law enforcement and for the support of our community.
On Tuesday, the 3rd, our half day of staff professional development focused on additional training about options-based emergency responses. We learned more about an options-based approach to violent intruders, ran through scenarios with law enforcement, and prepared for introductory lessons with students. It was a very productive afternoon and we are grateful that our staff is so committed to school safety.
Our next steps are to teach our students in an age-appropriate way about Options Based Safety Drills. I have met with the building Principals from the other WLCSD Elementary Schools to collaboratively develop a plan to introduce Options Based Safety Protocols to our students. You will receive a letter next week with more information regarding next steps with our students.
Musical Informances
As opposed to grade-level PERformances where students stand and sing on a stage without much audience interaction, the tradition at Keith is to host grade-level INformances. These informances will be presented like a normal music class and parents will be invited! The goal is to show family and friends what we learn in music class and how we learn it. Family members and friends are welcome to watch and participate according to their comfort level! We are very excited for this format and are looking forward to your attendance with your child on the following dates.
Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade informances will be held during the school day at regular music time in the media center.

Second Step Lessons
Parents, this week your children focused on the second step lesson below. Please take a moment to talk with your children about how they took time to show positive behavior at school.
E - Explore the Consequences
The “E” in our Second Step Problem-Solving Steps at Keith Elementary School stands for “explore the consequences.” A consequence is something that might happen if we chose to do one of our solutions. A consequence can be positive or negative. Exploring consequences helps us pick the best solution for our problem! This week, remember to ask yourself “If I did this solution, then what might happen?”
Our focus for next week is listed below. We will review the following with your children when they return to school on Monday.
P - Pick the Best Solution
The final Problem-Solving Step at Keith Elementary School is P: Pick the best solution! Once you have named the positive and negative consequence of each solution you thought of, you can pick the solution that works best. It’s easy to remember our Problem-Solving Steps because they spell the word “step” S-T-E-P. Using the Problem-Solving Steps will help you get along better with your friends and family. This week, if you have a problem, remember to STEP it up and use the Problem-Solving Steps.

Pizza Kit Fundraiser - Operation Save Sparky
Monday students will bring home order forms for our upcoming Pizza Kit fundraiser. Order forms will be due on March 25th. The final date for orders online is March 30. Pizza kits will be delivered between April 14 and April 17. We will not know the day until that week - more info. to come!
Attention! OPERATION SPARKY! and Little Caesar’s Pizza Kits
Question: Would your kids like to have their Pizza kits delivered to your house by Sparky the Dragon personally?
Because this year, purchasing Little Caesar’s Pizza kits will give you a chance to win delivery to your home by Sparky himself. Why? Because proceeds from this PTA fundraiser are going toward the $2,000 it costs to replace the tired, tragic, worn out Sparky the Dragon Mascot costume that has, quite frankly, run its course.
Anyone who has ever seen Sparky the Dragon at Keith PTA events cannot deny the excitement and inspiration he inspires in our little Dragons. It’s time to take care of our own, and raise funds for Operation Sparky! by selling Little Caesar’s Pizza Kits. The Keith Dragon who sells the most pizza kits will get those kits delivered to his or her house by Sparky the Dragon personally. (Some lottery winners might also get the chance to win Sparky home delivery.)
Please keep an eye out for the Little Caesar’s Pizza Kit flyers (and Keith PTA Facebook), which will inform you of how to purchase your kits online, and advise of all relevant deadlines.
Thank you very much for your help and participation in our Operation Save Sparky Little Caesar’s Pizza Kits fundraiser.
