December 7, 2020 - MRMS Parent Newsletter 6
MRMS Families,
I hope this newsletter finds everyone well. At the end of every Advisory class at MRMS, students close with a reminder that "we are all in this together". While in any year we seek to build a strong culture of community connectedness, in this school year this is perhaps more important than any. Students, staff, and families, we are truly all in this together. Last week, as we had our first in person cohort pivot to distance learning, we saw evidence of the strength of our community. Thank you to all the students, families, and staff who pulled together to pick up materials, alter in person lessons to become virtual, and for showing up online to continue the academics that are so important at this age. As I hear stories from other parts of the country, and even across the state of what learning looks like for students this year, I am so pleased in what we have built here at Monomoy Middle School, and so proud of all our distance and in person learners, and so grateful for the families that make it possible with all of your support.
"Individually, we are one drop, together we are an ocean." -Ryƫnosuke Akutagawa
Thank you!
In partnership,
Adam O'Shea. Principal Monomoy Middle School
Announcements
Coins Drive: Next week, we will be hosting a coin drive. Time to clean out the couch cushions and donate to help our local families. The money will be turned into gift cards. Students are encouraged to bring in coins to donate to our coin drive. We will have a donation box in the front office where we will be collecting all week. Please note that we understand that this can be a tough time of year for everyone, and that 2020 has been particularly challenging. The coin drive is completely optional and we only want you to give if you are comfortable doing so.
Card Drive: In the month of November, students created 1,185 cards through our card drive. This will be distributed to elderly people on the Cape, shipped to active and wounded military, and delivered to special people in their lives. As this activity was related to our school wide house cup competition, Team Giffyndor (named after science teacher Nancy Gifford), made up of the homerooms of Mr. Duggan, Ms. Gifford, Ms. Laferriere, Ms. Kane, and Ms. Allen, finds themselves ahead in the competition with 1,284 house points. In December students will participate in a 100 Acts of Kindness Challenge. Hopefully families will see the benefits of this with a little help from students at home too.
Intramural Soccer: Soccer continues to be a great success! If you are unsure about your next scheduled soccer date, click here!
Flu Shots: By the end of the calendar year students must have flu shot with documentation provided to the school (per Massachusetts Department of Public Health). There are a number places to get your child's flu shot including; from your primary care physician, CVS, Stop & Shop Pharmacy, STAR Market Pharmacy. Thank you to the more than 300 families that have already provided the flu shot documentation to the nurse's office. Kudos to you, your child may go to school in January!
MRMS School Store: The holidays here, as is the colder weather... A good time to grab some Monomoy Merch.
