2018-2019 School Year: Volume 21: Week of February 4, 2019

Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!

School Matters!!! Attend Today....Achieve Tomorrow!

Dear Families,

Wow what a week last week! We had snow. We survived the arctic vortex. And we survived multiple days off of school. We were in session two days last week, but many Grandview parents kept their children at home those days too. In the end, we all had to be flexible. From the teachers, to the parents and to the students, we all had to learn from flexibility and just go with what mother nature threw at us. I appreciate the flexibility with the report cards, they should come home on Monday. Some did get home on Friday, but most will come home on Monday. Another area of flexibility is with Math Night. We have a new date and Botsford will be joining us too to make it a Clarenceville Math Night on Tuesday, February 26th!! So thank you for your flexibility!!

Though it is in the 40's now! We are ready to wrap up our assessments this week and we are ready to have conversations about what the data is telling us so that we can make changes in our instruction to better meet the needs of our students.

Remember that despite all of the crazy weather, we need your children in school. Absences amongst some Grandview students are becoming excessive and you will be receiving absence and tardy letters, as well as, a phone call from me. We need your children at school and we need them to grow as learners and the only way that can happen is by getting them to school.

Valentine's Day dances are this week!! We hope that you will attend the fun!!

Thank you for your continued support at home!

Your Proud Principal,

Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

Grandview Math Night

Thank you for your patience as we continue to make this event happen for Grandview and our Ford Engineers. Tuesday, February 26th is our NEW Math Night. Due to the weather, Botsford will be joining us for this event and we will make it a Clarenceville Math Night. It will be from 5:30-7:30. Food will be served from 5:30-6:00 and games will be played from 6:00-7:30. Ford engineers and our 5th graders will be our volunteers. It should be an amazing night, so mark your calendars!

Valentine's Day Dance

A Grandview Tradition is the Valentine's Day Dances. February 7th is the Boy's dance from 6:30-8:00 and February 8th is he Girl's Valentine's Dance from 6:30-8:30. Remember to fill out the form and purchase your tickets ahead of time, as they are not sold at the door.

5th Grade Camp

$50 Deposit was due last Friday, the 25th. Between snow days and MLK day, it was a different schedule. Please communicate with your child's teacher about camp. If you need help with the expense, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher. We are wanting a 100% participation with Camp. It is a memory making event for your child and a great momento for their days at Grandview.

Attendance Matters

We have a high level of chronic tardiness and absences at Grandview. Some data that is very interesting that should make you think twice before having your student be home from school.

  • Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
  • Over 7 million (1 in 7) U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year.
  • Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent.
  • Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.
  • By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
  • Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
  • When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.

Clarenceville Educational Foundation Bowling

On Saturday, February 16, 2019, the Clarenceville Educational Foundation will be hosting a bowling fundraiser. The event is being held at Mayflower Lanes, 26600 Plymouth Rd, Redford. Registration is at 7:30 pm, bowling at 8:00pm. I'll be bowling and would love to bowl with Grandview families.

FOG Meeting

Tuesday is the next FOG meeting. There will be a drawing for free Valentine's Day Dance tickets. Hope you can attend at 6:00 pm.

Grandview Restaurant Event

Want a night off from cooking!! Then come and join us for our next Grandview Restaurant Event on Thursday, February 21st from 3-9:00 at Chuck E. Cheese's at 44275 West 12 Mile Road in Novi. Proceeds of this event comes back to Grandview. Be sure when you are there you let them know you are here to support Grandview Elementary!!

Custody Information

Please notify the school office if there are changes to your child’s custody that restricts one biological parent’s access to school records or to the child. Parents must supply a copy of the court order that outlines the restrictions.

School Closing

This week should be crazy with the weather. Between the snow on Monday and the sub-artic below zero weather, there may be days that could be called off. There are lots of ways of finding out if school is closed.

  • Our local newscasters run a school's closing list. Clarenceville is listed under Oakland County. Click on Detroit ( or WXYZ ( are a few options both on-line and on the TV with the ticker.
  • Mr. Shepich sends out a robocall to families
  • I will tweet from @grandview elementary and make a post on Grandview's facebook page
  • Staff, nor the office, come in on these days, so no one will be at the office to answer the phone.

All students who have a language other than English spoken at home and are identified as English Learners must take a state test called WIDA ACCESS for ELLs (Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners). The Enrollment Office form that was completed when your son/daughter enrolled in Clarenceville Schools tells us this information. Students will take the test eve if they are not attending ESL/EL classes. The test is for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Comprehension in English. Students will take the test between February 4-March 22, 2019. We will mail your child's test results to you when we receive them from the Michigan Department of Education. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Morrison at 248-919-0404.

Please do not send your child back to school the next day after being sent home with a fever. Your child has to be fever free for 24 hours in order to return to school.

After-School Event Guidelines

When there are events after school, please help to remind your child that even after school, there is a certain behavior to uphold. Kids should not be running up and down the hallways and screaming and yelling in the bathrooms and down the hallways. The students should take pride in their school whether it is during the school hours or after the school hours. Please help to support this. We need our students to be safe and school property respected .

We have 9 dads for WatchDogs. We hope to launch the program soon....soon...soon, by February 1st. Remember WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. ® school. During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Grandview would like to start the program as I am hoping that the mere presence of a WatchDOG dramatically reduces reports of bullying. On the day of their participation, WatchDOGS are given a brief review of their involvement and they wear an official WATCH D.O.G.S. ® t-shirt with a disposable ‘Dog Tag’ identifying them as WatchDOGS.

If you are interested in volunteering for this program, please contact the office or Ms. V, our Student Support Coach, at

Popcorn Day

In February, the popcorn days will be February 8th and 22nd.

Weather...Dress Appropriately

At Grandview, we go outside as long as it is above 10 degrees Fahrenheit. We combine the temperature and wind chill in making this decision. Therefore, we need the children to come prepared with hats, gloves, mittens, snow pants, winter coat and boots. If you have trouble providing your child with this necessary and essential winter gear, please reach out to us and we will help to support your child. If your child is not dressed appropriately, we will not be sending them outside. Additionally, if your child medical conditions that restricts them to be outside, please do not just send a note in from you. We need to have a medical note. Our office is becoming packed with kids that say, "my parents told me to stay in." We welcome them to stay in, but we need the medical note as we have kids that have medical restrictions and they do not have anywhere to sit due to the kids that do not have the medical note.

Pink Out Store

Team Gibson/Terpack still have the Pink Out Store opened. Suckers and other items will be sold to raise money for Karmanos Cancer Center. The store will be set up in the main hallway by the office and will be student run.

Reflection Room

Reflection room is up and running. Remember if your child is sent to the reflection room, a phone call is sent home to the parent. Though there are times, when your child just needs to go to that room to deescalate. Please note this room is NOT a detention or in-school suspension. It is a room where the kids reflect on their behavior and understand the impact their behavior has on others. Additionally, the kids partake in mindfulness and yoga activities. It helps to set the child up for success and focuses on the positive about fresh and new starts and repairing the relationships that need to be fixed. Thank you for your support!

Thank you to the 100 parents that have already completed the survey. Though I would love more results!! What we gain from the survey, helps to guide our work in the future. We have already looked at the feedback and results at the Principal Advisory Team to see what changes need to be made to our already amazing school. So if you have not had a chance to complete the survey, please consider taking time to fill it out.

We have had a lot of students arriving late. Tardies start at 8:40 and will be tracked. If your child comes in after the class did the lunch count, then they will automatically get PB&J as their lunch choice. Lunch counts will not be finalized until after 8:40. If you know your child is going to be late, then please call in the tardy and select your child's lunch choice to ensure that they can get another choice. Our lunch counts are becoming very lopsided and we need to ensure that the children are getting the choice that they signed up for. Also we need our students on time for school!!

Kroger and Grandview

We have collected $7.83 from August to October (we are newly established in Mid October so the collection is from half a month).

We have 21 families registered! Though I know we can have more!!! So please sign-up. Guidelines are below!!

To Use the Kroger Community Rewards Program:
Simply encourage your participants to visit Once logged into their Kroger account they can search for Friends of Grandview either by name or TH003 and then click Enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a rewards card.

Participants must swipe their registered Kroger rewards card or use the phone number that is related to their registered Kroger rewards card when shopping for each purchase to count.

Bookflix for Grandview Families

The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....

There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.

Username: grandvw

Password: flix

If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.

This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts

Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!

Transportation Changes

Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!

Job Opportunity

Substitute Noon Aides are needed. This job involves supervising children in the lunch room and on the playground from 11:30am-1:00pm. It is a great way to make money while working on your child's school schedule and it is FUN!!! Please stop in at the office to get an application if you are interested. You would need to be fingerprinted (approximately $70 cost) before working. Come and join the fun!!

Volunteering at School

If you are interested in volunteering at school you need to complete an iChat form (available in the office) and submit a copy of your driver’s license for a quick background check. Thank you! We love our Grandview Volunteers!
