2018-2019 School Year: Volume 21: Week of February 4, 2019
Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
School Matters!!! Attend Today....Achieve Tomorrow!
Wow what a week last week! We had snow. We survived the arctic vortex. And we survived multiple days off of school. We were in session two days last week, but many Grandview parents kept their children at home those days too. In the end, we all had to be flexible. From the teachers, to the parents and to the students, we all had to learn from flexibility and just go with what mother nature threw at us. I appreciate the flexibility with the report cards, they should come home on Monday. Some did get home on Friday, but most will come home on Monday. Another area of flexibility is with Math Night. We have a new date and Botsford will be joining us too to make it a Clarenceville Math Night on Tuesday, February 26th!! So thank you for your flexibility!!
Though it is in the 40's now! We are ready to wrap up our assessments this week and we are ready to have conversations about what the data is telling us so that we can make changes in our instruction to better meet the needs of our students.
Remember that despite all of the crazy weather, we need your children in school. Absences amongst some Grandview students are becoming excessive and you will be receiving absence and tardy letters, as well as, a phone call from me. We need your children at school and we need them to grow as learners and the only way that can happen is by getting them to school.
Valentine's Day dances are this week!! We hope that you will attend the fun!!
Thank you for your continued support at home!

Grandview Math Night
Thank you for your patience as we continue to make this event happen for Grandview and our Ford Engineers. Tuesday, February 26th is our NEW Math Night. Due to the weather, Botsford will be joining us for this event and we will make it a Clarenceville Math Night. It will be from 5:30-7:30. Food will be served from 5:30-6:00 and games will be played from 6:00-7:30. Ford engineers and our 5th graders will be our volunteers. It should be an amazing night, so mark your calendars!

Attendance Matters
We have a high level of chronic tardiness and absences at Grandview. Some data that is very interesting that should make you think twice before having your student be home from school.
- Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
- Over 7 million (1 in 7) U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year.
- Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in 10 kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent.
- Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.
- By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
- Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
- When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.

School Closing
- Our local newscasters run a school's closing list. Clarenceville is listed under Oakland County. Click on Detroit (https://www.clickondetroit.com/) or WXYZ (https://www.wxyz.com/) are a few options both on-line and on the TV with the ticker.
- Mr. Shepich sends out a robocall to families
- I will tweet from @grandview elementary and make a post on Grandview's facebook page
- Staff, nor the office, come in on these days, so no one will be at the office to answer the phone.
WIDA
All students who have a language other than English spoken at home and are identified as English Learners must take a state test called WIDA ACCESS for ELLs (Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners). The Enrollment Office form that was completed when your son/daughter enrolled in Clarenceville Schools tells us this information. Students will take the test eve if they are not attending ESL/EL classes. The test is for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Comprehension in English. Students will take the test between February 4-March 22, 2019. We will mail your child's test results to you when we receive them from the Michigan Department of Education. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Morrison at 248-919-0404.

Tardy
We have had a lot of students arriving late. Tardies start at 8:40 and will be tracked. If your child comes in after the class did the lunch count, then they will automatically get PB&J as their lunch choice. Lunch counts will not be finalized until after 8:40. If you know your child is going to be late, then please call in the tardy and select your child's lunch choice to ensure that they can get another choice. Our lunch counts are becoming very lopsided and we need to ensure that the children are getting the choice that they signed up for. Also we need our students on time for school!!
Kroger and Grandview
We have collected $7.83 from August to October (we are newly established in Mid October so the collection is from half a month).
We have 21 families registered! Though I know we can have more!!! So please sign-up. Guidelines are below!!
Simply encourage your participants to visit http://www.kroger.com. Once logged into their Kroger account they can search for Friends of Grandview either by name or TH003 and then click Enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a rewards card.
*Customers must have a registered Kroger rewards card account to link to your organization.
*If a member does not yet have a Kroger rewards card, please let them know they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger
REMEMBER, purchases will not count for your organization until after your participants register their rewards card.
Participants must swipe their registered Kroger rewards card or use the phone number that is related to their registered Kroger rewards card when shopping for each purchase to count.
Bookflix for Grandview Families
The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....
https://digital.scholastic.com/site/launch/bkflix?ucn=600063987
There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.
Username: grandvw
Password: flix
If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.
This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.
Enjoy!!!
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!
Transportation Changes
Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!
