EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

Central Office Communications: Week of July 26, 2020

OUR CURRENT REALITY

Hello EHT School Community,

As July is coming to a close in the midst of this heatwave, we are working hard preparing for the opening of our schools. While the focus is certainly on finalizing our Road Back to School Plan, we are also working on our typical summer projects that include ordering resources, cleaning buildings, maintenance of buildings, grounds, and buses, painting, reimaging computers, interviewing and hiring staff, and offering professional development opportunities to our teachers and staff.

I am grateful for the efforts of the 11 Road Back to School Sub-committees who have provided relevant information that will be shared at the District Road Back Committee meeting on Tuesday evening. The purpose of this meeting is to bring together the 11 subcommittee facilitators, community representatives from each sub committee, and Board of Education members to sit around a 'virtual' table, share feedback, research, and proposals with one another. I assure you that we have done the groundwork in terms of what can logistically work for our school district. We will bring that work to the table for the district committee to assist in piecing this puzzle together. We have been sifting through updates from the NJDOE, CDC, Department of Health, and our county superintendent. There are still many unknowns and changing guidance that surround us. The most recent update came on July 24 from the NJDOE regarding virtual learning where parents can choose full time virtual learning over sending their child to the school building for in-person instruction. Our reopening plan will be shared with the community next week so that parents have pertinent information to assist them in making an informed decision. A parent survey will follow the announcement of our plan with the intent to gather information on who will choose virtual learning and who will return to a school building. The data gleaned from this survey will guide us in more precise planning of class scheduling, bus routes, lunches, to name a few.

I will again stress that while the Road Back guidance provided a framework for the return to school, the reopening schools has been a monumental task. Your cooperation, understanding, and patience is greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that there is a chance that after we decide on a district plan, it may have to change if there is an uptick in Coronavirus cases. We are aware that this plan will not please all, however much thought and consideration has been put into planning for the reopening of our schools regarding the health, safety, and welfare of our staff and students.

CLIMATE & CULTURE

We have worked for the culture of our schools to include school improvement efforts to increase student achievement for ALL students. Through professional development opportunities, time and resources we are building an effective learning culture where students are provided a safe learning environment, where teachers collaborate in professional learning communities to review student progress, providing ALL students the opportunity to learn at high levels, and having individualized interventions through the RTI process to assist ALL students with learning. We know that in order to successfully educate each student, we must be cognizant of each student’s individual learning needs. This can only be accomplished if we work together to eliminate any predictability of achievement disparities by race, ethnicity, gender, language, disability, and/or economics.

Message to our Student Athletes,

Today, July 27th, Phase 1 of the Delayed Fall Season will begin for Egg Harbor Township High School with the arrival of our football players. All athletes will be required to take part in a pre-workout health screening and abide by safety protocols for workout sessions. This includes the wearing of masks when appropriate, social distancing, health checks, 90 minute practices, no sharing of equipment, and no more than two days of practice per week. Violation of these guidelines could have a program face disqualification as all athletes need to go through Phase 1 prior to any official team practices. The NJSIAA recognizes the fluidity of this virus and any needed changes would be made prior to August 28th. August 3rd all other sports and marching band may begin workout sessions. Athletes can not be working out as a team prior to this date. As a reminder, for the health safety, and welfare of our student athletes, student athletes should be supervised by a board approved staff member during any and all workouts and practices. August 28th will be the last day of summer workouts and a two week hiatus begins where all communications with athletes have to be virtual. No one is permitted on campus for in-person practices from August 29th to September 13th. Official pre- season practices can begin on September 14th. Games will begin on or near October 1st. There will be no long trips, out of state trips, or state championships. All student-athletes and coaches must adhere to this model in order to participate.

July 27 - Football summer workouts begin

Aug 3 - All other sports and marching band summer workouts begin.

Aug 28 - All summer workouts end; No activity up to and including Sept. 13th

Sept 14 - Official Pre-season practice begin for all sports and marching band

Sept 28 - Tennis games can begin

Oct 2 - Football games can begin

Oct 1 - All other sports games can begin
