Flying with Gratitude

This week concludes the last full month of the 2020-2021 school year. Take a moment to sit back and reflect on all that we've accomplished this year. New technologies, new ways of teaching and learning, "roomies" and "zoomies". We made it happen! We delivered for our students. We may not always have been our best selves, but really, who has these past 15 months. And that's ok! It's been written in this space before, but the light at the end of the tunnel is so much brighter than it ever has been. We have more challenging weeks behind us than ahead of us. There is so much to look forward to in the eleven final days of the year, and especially in the year ahead. Special thanks to Mrs. Paradise and Ms. Knight for being great sports and getting slimed for a good cause. Pictures of our Slime and Pie event are later on in this newsletter. Don't miss it!

Lastly, an extra debt of gratitude is due to our military families. We honor your courage and the ultimate sacrifice made by your brethren this Memorial Day Weekend. Thank you for volunteering to keep our country safe so that we may enjoy the freedoms we take for granted each and every day.

"As we express our gratitude

we must never forget

that the highest appreciation

is not to utter the words,

but to live by them. "

- President John F. Kennedy

Celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

This final week of AAPI Heritage Month, we are sharing a list of great books you can read with your student(s) recommended by the Anti-Defamation League. The ADL is an organization centered on combating racially charged violence and bigotry by partnering with schools and other groups to teach empathy, tolerance, and respect. These books are appropriate for all grade levels. The website also includes descriptions of each title.

Spring Testing Update

The 2020-21 school year has introduced new ways of teaching and learning and pushed us all to take on new challenges all while not giving up on our students or ourselves. The 2021 Summative Assessments mandated by the state will provide schools and families with another new opportunity--an opportunity to administer assessments that are closer to students and instruction and that will provide actionable feedback for teachers.

The California Teachers Association and the National Education Association together with many large urban districts in California urged the California Department of Education to submit a waiver for standardized testing for the 2020-21 school year to the US Department of Education. The waiver did not remove the requirement to administer assessments, but does permit districts some flexibility to use local assessments.

San Diego Unified School District plans to administer the FAST (Fast Track Reading) assessment for English Language Arts to students in grades 3-11 between now and June 15th, the District Essential Math Indicators (DEMI) assessment for math to students in grades 3-11 between now and May 27th, and a Social Emotional Screener to students in grades 4-12 between May 24th and June 15th.

If you have any questions regarding these assessments, please feel free to contact your student's teacher or Principal, Jeff Friedenberg at jfriedenberg@sandi.net.

Teacher Feature - Mrs. Sandy Lee

This week's Teacher Feature is none other than Mrs. Sandy Lee! Inspired to be a teacher herself being raised in a family of teachers, Mrs. Lee has taught at Fletcher since 2001. Mrs. Lee was born in Taiwan where she was raised until age five. Initially, she thought about a career in medicine but decided teaching would be much more fulfilling. Her earliest experience working with kids was working as a camp counselor in LA during the summer as a college student. Mrs. Lee's favorite part about being a teacher is having fun with kids and joking around with them. Her passion for math and supporting students with understanding the foundational concepts learned in elementary school is evident every day. Thank you, Mrs. Lee, for all you do at Fletcher!
