Meals and Snacks
We are encouraging students to eat at lunch time- which is 30 minutes. During the last 5 minutes of lunchtime we have a quiet time where there is no more talking but just eating and starting our clean up. We do have student throw away opened packaged food, they can not save it for later.
Our snack time on the other hand, is a 5 minute nosh! We will do snacks after we return from MAPS in the afternoon. Your child can have one snack that is on the healthy side. Students are asked to unpack their snack and place it in a basket in the morning- writing your child's name on the snack is very helpful. This way the teachers can place on your child's snack on their desk ready when they come back from MAPS and this stops confusion between similar snack items. We would like it to be healthy-pretzels, goldfish, kixs cereal, Cheerios, granola, fruit, raisins and fruit leather. Please try to stay away from potato chips and other foods with negative food value.
WE ARE ALLERGY AWARE!
We have some students that have peanut, eggs, soy and strawberries allergies.

What are we learning?
We are working on creating stamina while reading to ourselves. Shortly we will add reading to others and retelling a story. We have gone over some strategies on reading for reading a book and how to hold and read a book. These skills are needed as we move into a workshop environment. When the students have the skills to work independently then the teacher can move into meeting with small groups of students to work on reading skills. Every child must be on task in order to make this successful for everyone.
We are working on forming letters correctly. Do you watch your child write? There is a correct way to form the letters-called writing strokes. We have included 2 pictures of of strokes that are needed for our handwriting. Lewisville uses a modified slant writing (D'nealian is the copyrighted term for this style of print). This will allow us to move into cursive writing more easily in 2nd grade. All the letters start at the top of the line then we pull down. There are times when we do curved lines and slanted lines. There are also times when we do a pen or pencil lift of the page. It is a challenge to make sure that our children are writing correctly due to the technology of video, which encourages children to push up with their thumbs on video game controllers. You can request a letter formation chart from your child's teacher if you would like to know more.
Social Studies- is taught through Reading and Writing Workshops. We are going to looking at school routines, rights and responsibilities, following rules and laws, who are my leaders and how to be a good citizen.
Word Work-we are working on reviewing consonants and vowel. We are writing straight line letters LEFTHI. Then we will move into letters that are made with a circular stroke- letter C, S, G. This is done in our word work journals therefore you will not see any graded work coming home for letter writing. We will be happy to share with you by a conference.
Math- we are working math routines and exploring numbers 0-20. During this exploration we will work on both addition and subtraction up to 20. We are starting intentional problem solving where we will be working on strategies to solve word problems. Student will be able to explore math tools. Student should be able to explain how they are solving the problem. We are working on learning math routines for math workshop. When the students have mastered the skills to work independently then the teacher can move into meeting with small groups of students. Soon we will be sending home an IPS problem on Wednesday to work on. It will be due on THURSDAY. We will also send a Math Newsletter with it to give you a guide on the strategies.
Science-we are working on science tools and how our sense help us observe the world around us. We will be exploring sight, hearing, smell and touch. We are going to mention taste but will not be tasting anything in this segment for safety reasons.
