What is the the Edict of Nantes?

The Edict of Nantes put a temporary end to the ferocious religious wars between Roman Catholics and Protestants which had torn France apart since the 1560s.

Why is it important?

By signing the Edict of Nantes, Henri IV gave the protestants religious freedom and rights after the war of religion in France.
