Ripon Cathedral School Update

Week ending Friday 13th November

Children in Need

It was lovely to welcome Canon Ruth into school today to support our fundraising events for Children in Need. There are lots of crazy accessories on display and the children will be taking part in a "pin the tail on Pudsey", a lunchtime disco and a cake sale. Year 6 have done a fabulous job organising it and we are on track to raise lots of money. Total to follow next week. Thank you to everyone who has supported us with our fundraising today.

Remembrance Day

This Wednesday we held a special RE Day with the theme "Remembrance". The children explored answers to the questions 'who, why and how do we remember them?' The children learned about the Great War and studied history through poetry and art. They also explored beliefs and values, for example year 5 studied the life of Edith Cavell who, as a nurse during the war, looked after soldiers on both sides. Was this the right thing to do, was it patriotic? On Wednesday morning the children held two minutes silence at 11 am, this was observed impeccably by the children.

Please see below a very vivid account by one of our pupils.

Reception welcome Henshaws

Last week reception class welcomed Debs Roberts from Henshaws. Debs worked with the reception class who have been learning about what life is like if you are blind or visually impaired. The children tried out some of Debs' specialist equipment and took turns in supporting each other around the classroom. Thank you to our parent Lindsay Roome for organising this. We are excited about continuing our partnership work with Henshaws on the Buddy Bench project.

Alice in Wonderland

Year 3 have worked hard this week on an art project for Lockwood's in Ripon and the final result is magnificent. Lockwood's asked primary schools to produce a piece of artwork to celebrate Ripon's link with Lewis Carol and his Alice in Wonderland book. The pieces of artwork are going to be put together to create a large scale mural which will be on permanent display on a wall outside Lockwood's.

Year 2 Worship

Well done to Miss Stephenson and year 2 who led welcome worship on the theme of ‘light'. This topic was chosen because Diwali was celebrated on the same day as Remembrance Day this week and the children discussed how important light is in many religions.

Parent Meetings

Letters have been issued today providing details of the dates for the forthcoming parents meetings. The booking system will open at 5pm on Tuesday 17th November. Detailed instructions were forwarded with the letter sent home. If you need help booking an appointment or have any queries please speak to the office staff.

Do you use maths at work?

To support our learning in maths we are looking for parents/carers to come into school to share with a class of children how maths is used within the workplace. This will help us to reinforce to the children that the skills they are learning are used in a wide and varied range of jobs. Your input could inspire and motivate the children and it will demonstrate how maths is all around us. Remember that maths isn’t just calculating, it can be measuring lengths, weights or volumes or looking at charts , graphs and tables. If you are able to spare a small amount of time to support us with this or would like to ask further questions then please contact Miss Hardy in Year 5 or email her at

Governors News

Just a reminder that the Governors invite all Parents to meet with them in School on Monday 23rd November at 2.15pm. The topics for discussion will be the Parental Survey on Communication, the School Behaviour Policy and Homework across school. Parents can read the Behaviour Policy on the School Website or collect a copy from Reception. Please come along and share your views.
