- Chester Arthur was born in Fair Field Vermont on October,5 1829

- He developed a early interest in politics he became the defender of the blacks
Chester Arthurs wife Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur she was born on 1837 August 30 she died of pneumonia on January 12, 1880, one year before Chester Arthur became president
Chester Arthur before he became president
- Chester Arthur's first success was when he won a case that allowed blacks to ride on any New York street car
- Some of his jobs before he was president were becoming state engineer in chief, during the civil war he was in charge of outfitting the New York militia and a collector of the New York custom house the leader of the New York party machine a chairman in the republican state committee
- In the election of 1880 Chester Arthur became James Garfield's running mate James Garfield Was killed by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2 1881 and died on September 19 1881 the next day Arthur was sworn into office

- When Chester Arthur was president his biggest accomplishment was when passed the Pendleton civil service act it basically stopped the appointment of people to office merely because of there political affiliation or their connection to the president.
- He also passed the Edmunds anti-polygamy act that allowed someone to have one or more wifes he also modernized the military and vetoed a bill that would stop Chinese immigration for 20 years but that would ruin a treaty with China so they made it ten years
