One Year

I know so much has been said about the fact that we have reached the one year mark in our pandemic. Last year, on Friday, March 13th, we sent our kids and their iPads all home with the hope that we would see our learners again after Spring Break. We all know how that story played out and we all remember the challenges and the triumphs we shared in the next few months...and, now, an entire year.

This year anniversary is an opportunity for us all to say Thank You. Thank you for grace and support as we figured out virtual learning last spring. Thank you for sharing gratitude with our staff as they truly pulled everything together this year to make it an exceptional year of learning and growth. Thank you for your continued vigilance as we keep each other safe. We are still in a pandemic and we still have 11 weeks of school and 11 weeks to learn together.

Here's to the hope that the virus continues to get under control and the hope that we can be closer together soon!

Before and After School Reminders

-Please do not drop students off before 8:30AM. Students should stay with their parents in their vehicles until the bell rings at 8:30. We do not have playground supervision before this time and we have many students waiting by the door before the bell rings.

-After school life hack - the quickest and easiest way to pick up your students after school is to park in the lot and walk to pick up your child. The drop off area should be used for when students are already waiting at the sidewalk. Parents should not leave their cars at the drop off area. If you park and walk, the lot eventually empties out a couple times before all students have left school grounds.

-Our playground is used by the Park and Rec program for after school paid supervision. Beginning at 3:50, you must be with your child if they are playing on the playground. We don't have general supervision after school and if your child isn't with the Park and Rec program, they need to be accompanied by an adult.

Forward Testing Schedule

This spring, we will be administering the Forward Exam for all third, fourth and fifth grade students who attend Hillcrest Face to Face as well as SDW virtual students who have Hillcrest as their homeschool. This is a Department of Public Instruction requirement for all public school districts in our state. The tests are designed to obtain important information about each student’s achievement in the areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts (only fourth grade students take the science and social studies tests). One or more subtests will be administered daily during our testing period and it is very important that your son(s)/daughter(s) be at Hillcrest during their scheduled testing times. Students not in school on the scheduled testing days will be scheduled for a make-up test prior to the close of the testing window and it is generally best for the student to take the test with their class. Please see the attached document for days and times your child will be testing so you can plan accordingly. As you can see from the schedule, all virtual students will be tested here at Hillcrest on April 26th, 27th and 28th and additional information in regards to exact times and safety mitigations will be sent directly to each virtual family via email.

Update on the status of the 5th Grade Cross Country Run

Due to the Covid protocols that are needed to be followed to ensure a safe environment and experience for the students and families, we are going to be unable to hold the annual 5th Grade Cross Country Run this year. We remain hopeful that by the start of the new school year we will be able to return to hosting the event as we make our way out of the pandemic.

PTO Shoe Drive

The Hillcrest PTO has partnered with Soles4Souls Non-Profit Organization in order to conduct a shoe drive. This organization has done an excellent job in turning gently used shoes into an opportunity to provide for those who don’t have shoes, both locally and worldwide. Given the dire economic crisis this country and world has faced due to the ongoing health pandemic, resources like shoes are needed now more than ever.


There will be a gray bin by the Main Office to collect beginning March 10th and will be collected back up on April 12th. Please tie gently used shoes together, or place in a plastic bag and sent to school.

WOG Thank You

The Week of Gratitude was a huge success! Thank you to the entire WOG committee, chairperson: Liz Rogina, members: Andy Vossekuil, Dave MacCudden, Nicole Zeroth, Shelby Vossekuil, Marina Schatzman, Chris Adent, and Tammi Larson for planning the week! The hundreds and hundreds hours of work you put in to run this new event turned into fun for all students and families!


Thank you to everyone who went a restaurant night, participated in raffles, bid on the silent auction, donated to grade level baskets and everything between!


Final numbers are still coming in for totals, watch for specifics.
