Washington Elementary (10/7/22)
It's GREAT to be a Washington Expolorer!
October 7, 2022
Dear Washington Families,
Welcome to October. Our Pacific Northwest weather has been beautiful this fall and is finally starting to transition from summer into some cool fall mornings. Please be sure to dress your student in layers or send them with a coat; fresh air and activity at recess time support students overall health and well being.
Another exciting thing about October is that our Walk-to-Read and (3rd-5th) Walk-to-Math groups have started! Each student at Washington participates in small group instruction designed to target their individual needs and accelerate their learning.
In addition to our walk to program, our core English Language Arts instruction is aligned to the Science of Reading research and focused on foundational reading skills and reading comprehension. The Science of Reading research provides us with the information we need to gain a deeper understanding of how we learn to read, what skills are involved, how they work together, and which parts of the brain are responsible for reading development. Here is a great brief article published by the institute of multi-sensory education that explains more about the Science of Reading. I would love to talk more with you about our literacy instruction and the learning staff have done about the Science of Reading. Please reach out if interested!
Sincerely,
Gelinda Williams
Principal
