EAGLE TRACTS
CORNERSTONE INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY

Dear Parents,
I am happy to present to you the Eagle Tracts for March.
As we begin the month of March, I want to take a moment to highlight our school's selected theme for this month: Heritage Month. This is a significant theme for us as we remember the month of March, which marks the independence of Ghana. We celebrate the rich culture and heritage of Ghana, and we take pride in our country's history.
At our school, we encourage students to learn about their own heritage, as well as the heritage of others. By learning about different cultures, we can build respect and understanding, and celebrate our differences. This month, we will have activities that will enable our students to learn about Ghana's history, culture, and people.
I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize and appreciate our parents for their attendance of the PYP Sharing Program. The PYP Sharing Program is a crucial initiative that allows parents to understand the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) better. We appreciate your participation and willingness to learn more about our school's educational program.
Furthermore, I want to acknowledge our staff's commitment to professional development. Our staff is committed to learning and keeping themselves abreast with the latest practices in the PYP. They are dedicated to providing a high-quality education that will equip our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the future.
I am also delighted to recognize and congratulate all students who have won the Stars of the Month in their respective grades. Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to learning have not gone unnoticed, and we are proud of your achievements.
On another note, I want to take this opportunity to recognize the effort of our students, staff, and parents for academic excellence since the beginning of the second semester on January 11, 2023. Despite the challenges we faced, everyone showed resilience, dedication, and hard work in ensuring that we continue to achieve our academic goals.
To our students, I am proud of the progress you have made so far. Keep up the excellent work and remember that your hard work and dedication will pay off. Our staff will also continue to demonstrate dedication and commitment to our students' education.
Finally, to parents, your support and encouragement have been essential to our students' success.
Let us continue to work together to achieve our goals and make our school community proud.
I wish everyone a happy Heritage Month.
Sincerely,
Mr. William Gyamfi
PYP Coordinator

WHAT IS TAKING ACTION IN PYP?
Taking action in the PYP means applying what students have learned in the classroom to real-life situations. It involves students taking responsibility for their own learning and using their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make a positive impact in their community and the world. Taking action can take many forms, from simple actions like recycling or reducing water usage, to more complex actions like organizing a fundraiser or starting a community service project.
Taking action is important in the PYP because it helps students to develop a sense of responsibility and agency. By encouraging students to apply what they have learned to real-world situations, the PYP helps students to see the relevance and significance of their learning. It also helps students to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to become active, responsible, and compassionate members of their community and the world. Taking action can be done through participation, advocacy, social justice, social entrepreneurship, and lifestyle choices.

IB IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

In the month of February, the Eagle Family dubbed the month; "The Anti-Bullying Campaign Month" where students and facilitators collaboratively recited the C.I.A. anti-bullying pledge during morning assemblies. Students also took action by creating and designing some anti-bullying posters.

CULTURAL CARNIVAL
To crown the second grade 'Culture Week' celebrations, students had a cultural carnival themed,' "Festival of Cultures" where there was a display of songs and dances from different cultures, artifacts creation, and a parade.

As part of the culture week celebration, second-grade students performed an outstanding performance to celebrate Africa and other African leaders in relation to black history month.

STUDENTS AT WORK

EXHIBITION! EXHIBITION! EXHIBITION!!!
The PYP Exhibition is here again!!!!
The PYP exhibition is a culminating project that is part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). The exhibition is designed to be a collaborative and transdisciplinary inquiry project that engages students in exploring real-world issues and challenges. During the exhibition, students work together in groups to identify a global issue or challenge that is meaningful to them. They then conduct research, explore different perspectives, and develop solutions or actions that can help address the issue.
The exhibition is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning, communication, and problem-solving skills, as well as to showcase their personal attributes and attitudes as learners. It is also an opportunity for students to share their learning with a wider audience, such as parents, teachers, and community members.
The PYP exhibition is a significant milestone in the IB PYP program, and it provides students with a chance to take ownership of their learning and engage in meaningful inquiry that can make a difference in the world.

BULLYING: THE NEMESIS OF HEALTHY GROWTH
The International Baccalaureate and Cornerstone International Academy have a “NO Bullying Policy” because of the awareness of its detrimental effect on students and humans in general. Bullying can come about in different ways – it could be emotional, physical, social, verbal, or cyber. It is any form of hostile, inappropriate, injurious, and intentional behavior which is done repeatedly by an individual targeted to cause another person injury or discomfort.
It has a high propensity to lead the victim to be sad, become worried, have low self-esteem, feel lonely, has excessive fear, has depression and anxiety, and even lead to suicide. In a school, it could lead to a major decrease in the academic performance of the student and a loss of interest in school activities. Some of the pointers parents, guardians, teachers, and friends should look out for to determine if their wards are being bullied by any person include; unexplained bruises on the skin, sudden fear or disinterest in going to school, sudden writings of negative statements about the self, talk of self-harm, difficulty sleeping, continuous reporting of a particular student in school, avoidance of social situations among others.
Strategies Against Bullying
· Students should be encouraged to report bullies to adults
· Teachers and parents should have regular conversations with students and build trust
· Students should be encouraged to be buddies and not bullies
· Regular supervision and guidance in school, home, and social situations
·Creating efficient reporting and response plans with students both in school and at home.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY CELEBRATION AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL

STUDENTS AS ARTISTS!!!
In this completed calligraphy unit, students created decorative posters using the art of calligraphy to convey themes of education, success, and the future. The aim was to develop their skills in calligraphy while exploring the power of visual communication to inspire and motivate viewers towards positive goals. Students learned how to manipulate letterforms and spacing to create beautiful and expressive designs, enhancing their understanding of calligraphy as an art form, and using calligraphy as a tool for effective communication and expression. With these posters, students showcased their creativity while sending a message of hope and inspiration to their fellow students and the wider school community.

In this unit , our year 2 students created a comic strip on their daily routine. The aim was to develop their communication skills with the ability to express themselves in French. Students learned new vocabulary and used grammar and conjugation rules and convention to express their different routines in the French language.

OUR FIELD TRIP EXPERIENCE
MYP Year 4 students took a trip to the Artist Alliance Gallery, on February 15, 2023, to explore African artistic creativity and deepen their learning. The visit was to further their inquiry into Visual Arts.
Arriving at the location, students were warmly received by the curators of the premises. The tour guide gave a brief history of the institution and helped the students understand how the gallery operates on a day-to-day basis.
Students were guided through the gallery’s unique artworks like mixed media art (which is done on canvas), everyday products (that meet human needs), African traditional sculpture, traditional currency, and many more. Students also asked very vital questions and made critical observations of the artworks.
The final year students learned that all the artworks there had a particular story to them. The tour guide explained the rationale and motivation behind almost all the artworks. One of the most interesting was the model of the historical ‘Boneshaker’ that was on display. The guide explained that the artist made it to represent life after death and serves as a vehicle to transport death into the spiritual realm.
In end, the students took a group picture with the tour guide. It was an amazing time spent exploring our traditional art.

MIDDLE SCHOOL INTERDISCIPLINARY UNIT (I.D.U)
The end of Unit 3 was crowned with Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) presentations by all year groups. Throughout the unit, students explored their transfer skills and were engaged in problem solving activities to gain deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of different subjects. Students from MYP year one made connections between performing arts and visual arts. MYP year two students were engaged in an IDU connecting science and design, MYP year three students connected English Language and Literature, Mathematics and Design, and finally, MYP year four students also had the opportunity to connect their learning in language acquisition and Individuals and Societies. The event involved multiple teams of students sharing their learning experiences and perspectives as they presented their work through oral presentations and storytelling. Ultimately, the IDU gave students the opportunity to showcase their learning, creativity, and critical thinking skills, and to gain a broader understanding of the world around them in order to be better equipped to tackle complex issues in the future.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL
On February 24th, 2023, the MYP Parent-Teacher Conference (PTC) was successfully held from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event provided an opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss the progress and needs of our students. During the event, parents were able to have individual meetings with teachers to discuss the academic performance, behavior, and social-emotional development of their wards. Teachers provided feedback on their wards’ strengths and areas for improvement, as well as any challenges or concerns that needed to be addressed. The PTC event also featured a video shown on the IDU presentations of students and an ICT support session for parents.
The Coordinators also engaged in meetings with parents to suggest valuable resources and strategies to support their wards’ academic progress and personal growth. We received positive feedback from parents who appreciated the opportunity to discuss their ward’s progress with their teachers and gain insights into how to better support their learning. Teachers also found the event to be valuable, as it allowed them to share their feedback and insights with parents in a collaborative and supportive environment.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPELLING BEE COMPETITION

Spell It Right is a spelling bee competition geared towards helping middle school students to improve their spelling, expand their vocabulary, sharpen their pronunciation of words and give them the opportunity to understand complex words.
The theme for this year’s spelling competition is “If a word must be spelt, then it must be spelt
right!".
On the 1st of March, 2023, the grand finale of the spelling competition gave eight intelligent spellers the ability to battle for the renowned position of the Spellibrity of middle school. After four rounds of competitive display of skills, Daniella Akonor emerged as the winner of the event, closely followed by Seyram Nyakpo and Jacqueline Agbeshie as the 1st and 2nd runners- up respectively.
