Gladstone celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Did you know?
• Latino/Hispanic people have roots in 21 nations on three continents.
• Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the world. [English is third.]
• At 90%, Gladstone's Latino/Hispanic graduation rate is one of the highest in Oregon, more than 10% over the state average. These students achieved an impressive 17% improvement over the past six years.
• Family Liaison Yesenia Boschetto works with Latino/Hispanic families, providing bilingual outreach and access to family and student resources. Families can contact her at 503.496.3939.
• 193 Gladstone High students are studying Spanish this year. The program offers four years of Spanish instruction.
• Gladstone High offers a biannual student trip to Central America, including a home stay with local families. Hopefully this will resume after the pandemic.
Jeremy Shaw fills Gladstone School Board vacancy
Gladstone parent Jeremy Shaw is the newest member of the Gladstone School Board, chosen to fill Position 6, vacated when Greg Lind resigned in July. Shaw was selected by the Board following public interviews with all nine applicants and was sworn in on September 8.
Shaw, employed by the City of Beaverton, has two children attending school in the district, one in eighth grade and one in tenth grade. A Gladstone resident since 1999, he has been active in the community, serving as a volunteer firefighter for 9 years, a youth soccer coach, and a volunteer with the Kraxberger Gearheads robotics club.
“I’m honored to be on the Gladstone School Board,” said Shaw. “My goal is to help foster a safe learning environment for students and staff while holding to the highest standards of education. I’m excited to see what the next few years will bring.”
Free soccer clinic Friday for grades 6-8
Girls and boys in grades 6-8 only are invited to a soccer clinic hosted by the Gladstone High School boys team. The event will be Friday, September 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at GHS's Dick Baker Stadium.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted to help fund uniform and equipment needs for the Gladstone High boys team.
Parents are encouraged to stay and talk with Head Coach Ryan Hardwick about our program, youth development, and our continuing youth soccer outreach efforts.
