Heat Stress Is A “Profit Robber” For Dairymen
It is not a question of “if” we will have days in Northwest Iowa that cause heat stress in milking herds, but rather, how many days we will have. Heat stress decreases feed intake and milk production, decreases milk components including fat, lowers breeding efficiency and compromises the immune system plus the heat and humidity is a near perfect environment for mastitis pathogens to thrive. “Ag Gag” Laws: An Overview
Over the last 5-10 years, many animal activist groups have focused on increasing state animal abuse laws to not just improve animal welfare, but also encourage people to stop purchasing any products coming from animals. Now there is a shift in focus from this traditional platform to going straight to major retailers (McDonalds, Tyson, etc.) and pressuring them to establish and require humane husbandry practice standards for the livestock they purchase or own. Fly Population Management on Dairies
Fly Control in concentrated animal feeding operations such as dairies is a challenge, especially as the weather heats up and there is abundant moisture and organic matter available.
