Dear Mariano Castro Parents,
I need you to help with PTA for the next school year! Several of the current board members are moving on to middle school and we need new parents to step up and fill the officer positions that support our school. Please give me a call or email to learn more about the positions before making a decision. My appreciation in advance for considering being an important part of PTA!

Best regards,

Theresa Lambert

California School Dashboard Results

California has launched a new website designed to help communities across the state access important information about K-12 districts and schools. The California School Dashboard features easy-to-read reports on multiple measures of school success, including test scores, graduation rates, English learner progress and suspension rates. The Dashboard is part of California’s new school accountability system basedon 2013's Local Control Funding Formula. It is the next step in a series of major shifts in public education that have raised the bar for student learning, transformed testing and placed the focus on equity for all students.

To learn more about California's accountability and continuous improvement efforts, visit the CDE Dashboard Web page.

Why a new system and new tool?

California is committed to informing communities about how well our schools are doing. California's future success depends on tapping into the potential of all students, so they graduate ready for college, careers and life. For schools to reach this goal, teachers, parents and the community need clear and useful measures of progress. As an accountability tool, the Dashboard will help the state identify schools (including charter schools) and districts needing targeted assistance.

What’s different?

In the past, accountability systems for districts and schools relied heavily on test scores. But one test taken on one particular day doesn't provide a complete picture of all the ways schools are helping students succeed.

Think of it this way: You can’t drive a car by only watching the speedometer. You also keep your eye on the road, check the mirrors, monitor the gas tank and pay attention if the engine light comes on. Similarly, the Dashboard provides information on different aspects of student performance, which will give a more complete picture of a school’s progress. The Dashboard also reports on growth to show a school’s trajectory over time.

PTA News

Date Change- PTA Association Meeting

The date of the next PTA Association Meeting has been changed. It will be held on Wednesday, January 17th at 6:30 pm. The location will be in the MUR. We will be discussing many items on the agenda including fundraising efforts, a new spirit wear order, and Nominations of Officers for the 2018-19 school year. This is the third meeting of five for this school year. The meeting is usually about one hour long. Snacks and child care will be provided. Please plan to attend.

Labels for Education Update

Thank you to all who turned in your Labels for Education. The program is ending soon. Our last submission for points was made by the January 2, 2018 deadline. We will soon be cashing in our points for equipment to use during P.E. classes and recesses. The program lasted for over 43 years, but due to declining participation the company has regretfully decided to end this great opportunity. Mariano Castro School is sorry to see the end in sight. An order will soon be placed to trade the points for equipment by the June 2018 deadline.

Box Tops for Education

Keep collecting and turning in Box Tops for Education. This fundraising program is still running and Mariano Castro wants to take advantage of the “free” money that comes to our school from people clipping and returning the coupons. Each one is worth ten cents, the same as a dime. Just 10 coupons = $1.00 for Mariano Castro School! They add up quickly. Please remind your neighbors, friends, and family members to save them for your child’s school. Our next submission deadline is in the spring. We have already earned over $150.00 this school year!

Spirit Wear

An order for NEW Spirit Wear is being placed very soon. This week the PTA Board is planning a vote to approve the funds to process the order and will select which items will be ordered. This has been a long procedure, since we had to lower the Spirit Wear Budget for this school year. With future fundraising plans, we hope to introduce some new items slowly over the next few school years. Sales will be scheduled when the new products arrive at school. Watch the calendar for sale dates! Go Castro Dolphins!!
