Des Moines Art Festival
Our Hanawalt Hawks have been busy creating tremendous art pieces. A few students have been selected to have their artwork showcased at the Des Moines Art Festival DMPS student show this summer! They get an award, membership to the Art Center, a special reception during the festival, and artwork also hung at the Downtown Library for a few months before getting to take it home next August.

This week a review of Habit 6, Synergize, means when two or more people work together to create a better solution that neither would have thought of alone. It’s not your way or my way, but a better way. Synergy is taking good ideas and making them better by working together. Examples of synergy come from nature, history, literature, and personal experiences.
For example, synergy happens in nature when a flock of geese heads south for the winter. They fly in a V formation because due to the updraft, the entire flock can fly farther than if each bird flew alone.

Hanawalt Community Notes
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3rd – May 7th
Please help us with this simple project for Teacher Appreciation Week! We are excited to surprise our teachers with a wall full of Post-Its telling them how great they are. Sometime this week your student should come home with an envelope. Inside the envelope, there will be several Post-Its. Write notes to the Hanawalt teacher or staff member telling them what makes them great. Have your students fill some out as well. Send them back to school with your student next week (May 3-7). As they walk into the school, they will stick them on or around the bulletin board. We are excited to see how full we can get that wall!
If your child is a part of online learning, your family can still participate. We will have a table inside the front vestibule of the school. There will be post-its and pens available there. Stop by next week and fill out some Post-Its and put them in the container of finished notes. A staff member will bring them into the school and stick them on the wall for you. Don’t forget your masks! Lets fill the hallway with appreciation for our amazing staff!
For Your Calendar
Today, Eatery A will have an event donating 10% of the proceeds they receive from Hanawalt’s friends or family. All you have to do is order their delicious food and say it’s for the Hanawalt Fundraiser! Please pass this on to family and friends!
Tomorrow - May 7th, we will have a Parents’ Night Outdoors, where you will receive a Des Moines related scavenger hunt and can take photos of yourself planting and link them to our social media! If you text, email, or post pictures to the Hanawalt Facebook page of yourself or your family on your search, the first 6 will get a prize!
Volunteer Opportunities
As an organization we are going to move forward as the Hanawalt Community Organization and no longer be the Hanawalt PTA, starting fall of 2021! This will include more opportunities for smaller volunteer options. If you’re interested in looking into committee or short-term roles, please contact us at HanawaltElementaryPTA@gmail.com or call/text at 515-664-3737.
