If you are a CLX volunteer and have not yet attended one of the Level II Trainings that have been offered this spring, please plan to attend one of the final two dates for this school year. All volunteers must have attended a training. Please contact Miriam Scott at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you will not be able to attend one of the scheduled trainings before the school year's end. This is a mandatory training for ALL volunteers. The trainings are offered:

  • Wed., May 2 at 12:00pm at the ACS Training Room @ Central Office (85 Mountain St. Asheville 28801)
  • Tues., May 15 at 12:00pm at the ACS Training Room @ Central Office (85 Mountain St. Asheville 28801)

Please click below to sign up to be an End-of-Grade Test Proctor!

EOG Proctor Sign-Up Form

This opportunity is open to parents of students in all grades. Parents of younger grades are encouraged to sign up even though your child is not yet having EOG tests. This experience will help parents get a glimpse of what to expect when your child begins EOG testing in 3rd grade.

2018 Teacher Appreciation Week Activities

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7th - May 11th. We’ve come up with a few ideas to show our teachers how much we appreciate them. Click here for details. Please also consider any assistant, specialist or someone else who you would like to thank. Feel free to follow the suggestions below or come up with your own way to show your appreciation. We will send out e-mail reminders throughout the week of May 7th.

Claxton's Wall of Fame

We are happy to announce that the 5th Grade Wall of Fame is up and ready for viewing in the school lobby! We would like to invite students and staff to enjoy the gorgeous headshots taken by Gary Peeples, as well as the Claxton Class of 2018 students' highly individual, thoughtful, and entertaining "Personal Statements." Thank you to Gary along with Beth Mahan and Laird Green, 5th grade Class Parent Reps, who put a lot of love and effort into this wonderful honoring of our graduating 5th graders.

Classroom Volunteer Opportunities

Claxton has several current needs for one-on-one and small group volunteers in the classroom setting. One of these opportunities focuses on helping 2nd grade students with reading fluency work, and another opening is being paired to work one-on-one with kids in their grade level classrooms during various learning times. Please contact Miriam Scott, Claxton Volunteer Coordinator, at miriam.scott@acsgmail.net if you are interested in helping us meet these needs.

Volunteer Background Checks for Asheville City Schools

As a volunteer, you are an important part of the school community. When you become a volunteer, your work takes on special significance -- though you are not part of the staff, you share the same responsibilities that paid staff are held to while engaged with students. We are THANKFUL for all of our volunteers! Please click on the link below to complete a background check. This background check is required for anyone who may work in the classroom, serve as reading and math tutors, extracurricular coaches, mentors, and overnight field trip chaperones. It only takes a couple of minutes to fill out the information, and once it is returned (usually within a week), you are all set to go.

Support ACS Family

Many in our community had ties to the recent shooting victims, and as we collectively grieve this loss, we wanted to share a way that the Claxton community can provide support. Donations to benefit Erica Smith's surviving family members, including her two elementary school-age children, can be given to Eblen Charities. To make a donation visit the Eblen Charities website and click on the donate button. Please make sure to set the designation tab (found at the bottom of the page) to the Erica Smith Family Fund. We appreciate your support.

A BEE-utiful day of learning!

Thank you to the incredible Ms. Amy Brown for facilitating the amazing learning and fun for Claxton Bee Day 2018 and to the 5th grade for their amazing leadership! Bee Day encouraged students to learn more about our school hive and also allowed them to try on a beekeeper's uniform, taste honey and learn more about waggle dances. Additional coverage can be found on Facebook and Twitter. Catch our Kindergarten performing bee poetry in this YouTube video. Also, see Bee Day was in the news on WLOS and Mountain Express,
