4th Grade Newsletter
APRIL 2019 EDITION
Hard to believe it, but we are almost finished with the school year
with only 8 weeks of school left!
We want all our 4th graders to finish the school year strong and
be prepared for a successful start to their 5th grade year!
Just an FYI - Last week on purple paper, we sent the Austin field trip permission slip in the Monday folder! We also sent home report cards.
MATH Update
Hello All!
We have made it to April! We will wrap up our measurement unit this week and begin our geometry unit which will start with basic geometry terms. From there we will dive deeper by covering different types of lines, if the exist, for 2 dimensional figures. Students will also cover and be expected to apply knowledge to identify the 3 main types of angles.
Along with angles we will learn how to illustrate the measure of an angle as part of a circle and determine the approximate measures of angles in degrees to the nearest whole number using a protractor. Students will be given plenty of practice opportunities which will help when moving into the last part of our unit.
We will learn how to draw an angle with a given measure as well as determine the measure of an unknown angle. That will round out our geometry unit and we will finish with an end of unit assessment. Our last week in April will cover financial literacy. As most are aware, we are weeks away from our Math STAAR exam. We are having daily spiral review questions that will continue up to the test.
We are almost to the finish line and with your continued support we will make it! If you should have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Meadors through my school email ( lphillips@csisd.org).
READING/WRITING Update

Students are finished with their book clubs and doing their final project.
We are starting drama and will perform a play.
Homework is still reading 120 minutes a week.

The STAAR Writing test is Tuesday, April 9th. Please be sure they get a good night’s sleep and a protein filled breakfast before the test.
Our next writing assignment will be publishing a simple picture book.
Then we will work on persuasive essays.
Followed by student choice writing.
Poetry -
April is National Poetry Month.
For National Poetry Month read a poem at dinner every night.

Students will have their poems scattered throughout the building for all students to take, read, keep in their own pocket, and trade.
Last year, we even had a few poems written in other languages!
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Update
In Social Studies:
We will look at the Texas Frontier and the growth of the cattle industry, how the railroad impacted Texas and free enterprise during the oil boom. Each week we read in our newspapers and pull out main ideas/details through group discussions, activity sheets and CRQ's (critical reading questions).
In Science,
We are wrapping up looking at the impact weathering, erosion and deposition make on the Earth's surface including types of soil. Next, we will look at the importance of conservation of natural resources then move into producers, consumers, and the relationships they have with each other in food webs/chains and ecosystems.
**As a reminder, Encourage your child to participate in daily discussions in class to help them process what we are learning at a deeper level. Look at the weekly quiz grades to see if your student is understanding the content we are covering.
Don't forget you can access and review the vocabulary on the website. http://mann4thgradeclass.weebly.com/
