Important Information

Education Week Publication: How Do Kids Learn to Read? What the Science Says
From Education Week: "How Do Kids Learn to Read? What the Science Says"
"...The debate on how to teach early reading has raged for a century. Research has shown that reading is not a natural process, and it’s not a guessing game. Written language is a code. Certain combinations of letters predictably represent certain sounds. And for the last few decades, the research has been clear: Teaching young kids how to crack the code—teaching systematic phonics—is the most reliable way to make sure that they learn how to read words."

HALLOWEEN GUIDE 2019
October is halfway through and the ghosts and ghouls are preparing for Halloween Night!
This week, a Halloween Guideline will be emailed with details for our schedule of events on October 31st.
Parade:
Butler is making preparations to celebrate Halloween with a Parade held on Thursday, October 31st beginning at 9:30 AM - outdoors (weather permitting). Please dress appropriately for all weather conditions. If weather becomes a factor, a morning email announcement will send an update.
Parties:
As per PA State CHILD ABUSE Guidelines, ALL SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS MUST HAVE THEIR VOLUNTEER CLEARANCES ON FILE WITH CB HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT. Class Party Food drop-off will take place through the Main Office on the 31st. If you have refrigerated items, please bring closer to your child's scheduled party (we do not have refrigeration as an option). Secondly, only parent Halloween party volunteers (with clearances) will gain access to classrooms during the parties. More information will be shared by your classroom's Parent Homeroom Coordinator about class needs for the 31st.
Halloween Candy Collection for Troops
It’s almost Halloween! Would you like to help us deliver a little "taste of home" to our troops who are heroically serving overseas? You can donate your excess Halloween candy and help make our brave troops smile!
CB South HS, through Operation Eternal Gratitude, will be collecting candy for our troops. This small token of appreciation is a "Halloween Thank You" as we package goodies to our troops in hopes to show our appreciation.
Please send your wrapped, non-powdery candy to your child’s classroom no later than Friday, November 8th.
CB Parent Technology Toolbox
During the school day, the CB Technology Support Center (helpdesk) has a primary focus of providing assistance to our students and teachers to maintain optimum learning. With the increase of 1:1 devices this year, the volume of calls and emails to our helpdesk has greatly increased. Many calls are from parents, too. In many cases, school offices are the first point of contact for our parents. CB Technology and Innovation Department is happy to help assist parents with information like below.
Please find a CB Parent Toolbox link (Image Below) which provides information and supporting details to many of our systems/programs. Our Support Center Techs (Shannon, Chris and Colleen) are happy to assist with better understanding these resources and the support available to our parents.
Department News
Quest
Every grade level is revisiting the engineering design process. Students are revisiting steps that engineers go through when taking on a challenge. In addition, all students are learning that grit and determination are critical when taking on a problem of any kind. Our theme for the first trimester is “It’s the perfect first try!” with the goal to understand that mistakes are necessary when learning something new. (Failures are really just our first attempts in learning.)
Grade Level Spotlight: 1st Grade students are currently taking on fairy tale rescue missions. Most recently, students had to develop and build a plan to save Rapunzel from the tower since her hair could not grow any longer. The next mission is designing a safety seat to keep Humpty Dumpty on the wall. There are plenty of failed attempts, but there are more smiles than anything else!
The Reading Corner - News and Info from the Butler Library
Third graders have been learning how to find “Just Right Books” by using and practicing the “Five Finger Test” in Library. By using the “Five Finger Test,” our third grade students can work toward a greater level of independence when choosing and checking out chapter books to read.
The Music Scene - Butler Music News
Students in 5th grade music celebrated Hispanic-American history month by learning about Gloria Estefan who is from Cuba and records music in both Spanish and English! We sang “Get On Your Feet” and did some dynamic dance moves to the music. Change up your playlists at home by asking Alexa to play you music by Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine.
Get Active! - Physical Education Updates
Students in grades K-2 have been working on various locomotor skills including gallop, skip, hop and jump. They have been working with jump ropes as well.
Students in grade 3-6 have been learning how to throw and catch a football, as well as, how to get open on offense and how to defend on defense. 3rd and 4th grade students will put those skills into various lead-up games this week. 5th and 6th graders played flag football this past week.
Nurse's Office
Unfortunately, the Walk to School Day was cancelled by the township due to scheduling conflicts. We hope to launch the event next school year so stay tuned in mid-September for more information.
Thank you to all who have turned in their physical and dental forms, please keep them coming. They are due by Oct 15th.
- Kindergarten and Entry requires both a Physical and Dental form
- 3rd grade requires a dental form
- 6th grade requires a physical form
If your child is injured at home or school, we will need a doctor’s note listing any physical restrictions for PE and recess. We will also need a note if your child is on crutches, wearing a boot or splint, etc.
Lice is something that occurs every school year, every season. Please try to get in the habit of checking your child’s head weekly. If you find any live "louse" or "nits" (eggs), please call the health room to let us know. We will tell you know what you will need to do.
For more information about lice or any medical information, please visit my SharePoint: https://www.cbsd.org/domain/460
