New Britton Elementary - December 4, 2015

Principal's Message

Dear Bulldog Families,

It has been AMAZING to see our students’ interest in science growing this year through scientific inquiry…kindergarten took a trip to the farm and studied pumpkins. First grade students just finished project work regarding soil and worms and have an amazing partnership with Ritchey Woods. Second grade students analyzed owls and dissected owl pellets. Third grade scientists investigated rocks and minerals and created concrete molds with the help of an IMI representative. Fourth grade kicked off their year exploring the scientific method and how they can be scientists. Also, several classrooms are participating in a community garden project that directly benefits our Fishers community. These are just a few examples of our scientific study…classrooms are bursting with scientific wonder and inquiry.

We are so excited for our scientists to have an opportunity to further explore a question they have about science. The New Britton Elementary annual Science Fair (grades 1-4) will be held on Thursday, February 18th during the day with an award ceremony and special program from 6:30-8:00p.m. In order to prepare and generate excitement for this big event, we are hosting a Science Fair 101 with Professor Steve on this coming Thursday, December 10th from 7:00-8:00p.m. (doors will open at 6:45p.m.). We hope to see your family in attendance at this event. Kindergarten students are certainly encouraged to attend as we would like for them to participate in science fair next year.

As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a restful weekend!

Sincerely,

Lori Mankin

Morning drop-off reminder

The safety of our students, families, and staff is a top priority at New Britton. Please do not enter the main parking lot from 8:30-9:00 a.m. so that our buses can safely deliver students to school. Parents are welcome to drop their students off at the circular drive beginning at 8:40. Please pull up in between the orange cones and do not drop your students off until a staff member is available to assist them. For everyone's safety, please do not pass, even if your child has already exited your vehicle. After 8:55, a parent is required to walk their student into the office to sign him/her in. We thank you for taking these precautions to keep everyone safe.

  • December can be a very fun, festive and somewhat frazzled month. Below are some tips for the month:
  • Remind your students that school does not end until winter break starts which for NBE is December 18. The teachers at NBE have a lot of learning to pack in these last few days. Insist that your student keep up the regular school routine including bedtime routine.
  • In regards to sticking to the same routine, try to do the same thing with eating healthy foods, exercising, and general health issues. Keeping with the routine will keep those pesky illnesses away.
  • Plan to do something together like driving around to check out holiday lights, bake something sweet, start a large puzzle, and/or start to read a book that the whole family would enjoy.
  • Help your children focus on someone other then themselves. Find some activity that your family can be involved in that would help those less fortunate.
  • Explain the meaning of holiday or family traditions and why they are special. What are your family traditions? Don’t have any, then this is the year to start one.
  • Learn about what a different culture does during this time of the year. Compare and contrast how it is different from your family celebrations or traditions.
  • If your circumstances are different this year then last year you can always start a new tradition.
  • Give yourself the gift of understanding. You can’t do it all. You may try and come really close, but then it may also come at a cost – financially, physically, and emotionally. Having a happy and relaxed, but scaled down festive season can be just as much fun.
