Mrs. Walden's Weekly Update
Week of Aug. 22-26
Hello Cardinal, Families!
I am happy to say that all students have completed their iStation testing for both reading and math for the month of August, and everyone has completed their MClass testing! (MClass is the reading assessment that the state requires for teachers to administer three times a year.)
With that being said, I still have a lot of running records to complete. I have read with about half of the students at least once, but need to read at least two books total with each child to determine every child's highest level of independence. This is always a task I dread because I would much rather be actually teaching, but I know that it is important data to gather so that I can better serve your children during our small group time. With that being said, my goal is to knock all of these out this week so if your child comes home and says they did a lot of independent work this week, this is why. I promise I dislike it as much as they do!
You will notice a reading log/ challenge in your child's daily folder this week. The purpose of this sheet is to help teach your child some responsibility when it comes to completing homework and to help develop that habit and routine of having to do something each night. In third grade, students will be given homework beyond reading nightly for 20 minutes and getting into that routine now, will help set them up for success later. My only request with this is that you please encourage your child to complete their own reading log and not do it for them. Since there are only two weeks left in the month, we will be doing a weekly reading challenge for now. Starting in September, this will be a monthly challenge. Students who complete the challenge will earn a prize!
I will be absent Thursday morning so that I can take my four-year-old for allergy testing. I don't really know what to expect since food allergies is not something our family has ever had to deal with, but assuming that all goes well, I should be in by lunch time. Just in case I don't make it back, please be sure to copy any urgent messages you send to me also to Mrs. Jenn.
Curriculum
Math: Students will practice writing and answering their own questions about data shown in picture graphs and bar graphs. There will be a mini-assessment on picture graphs and bar graphs on Tuesday. Lastly, we will be using tape diagrams to solve comparing problems. I have included an example of what I mean by this at the end of this section.
Social Studies: We will continue talking about communities.
Writing: We will continue talking about and creating different types of sentences- statement, exclamatory, and question.
THANK YOU!!
I also wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has donated items to our classroom from our wish list!! You all have been so generous, and I cannot thank you enough!!
