This Week's Tip
As we get closer to the Winter break (December 20 through January 4) I thought we should switch over to some tips to help students handle the disappointment that may come this holiday season. It may be necessary to make changes to some traditions due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. These tips come from an article from Connecticut's Children by Amy Adolfo Signore, PhD, MPH and Emily Wakefield, PsyD
6-12 years old: Help your child cope with holiday blues – and build resilience for the future.
- At this age, children understand the precautions that need to be taken due to COVID-19.
- Validate their feelings of disappointment and sadness about changes to their holiday traditions: It’s normal and OK to feel angry, frustrated or sad.
- Remember that helping children overcome disappointment helps them build resiliency.
- Ask them for their ideas about how to make the holiday special.
- Teach fun relaxation strategies – try yoga for the first time, or practice slowly breathing in and out the scent of a favorite treat, lotion or candle.
13-18 years old: Ask, listen and encourage COVID-safe holiday activities.
- Ask teens how they are feeling.
- Let them know you are there if they need to talk.
- Listen! Often, teens just want someone to listen and not solve the problem for them.
- Offer perspective on the situation by looking at the big picture.
- Allow them a sense of control by giving them choices – maybe to have friend over on a different day to celebrate the holiday, or allow them to plan a special activity.
- Encourage positive social activities to honor the holiday season, such as how to volunteer in a socially distanced way.
Parents and caregivers: Manage your own disappointment about this holiday season.
- Allow yourself to feel sad, worried or angry.
- Do something to nurture yourself.
- Adjust your expectations.
- Look at the big picture.
- Children take cues from their parents. If you maintain a positive, festive and calm demeanor, your kids will pick up on that and do the same.
Schoolwide STEAM Project
Arcade is preparing for a whole school STEAM project. We will be holding a materials pick up day in January (date to be determined). Every student will receive a STEAM kit to work on at home under the guidance of our teachers. Student will also have zoom time to work together with other students. This promises to be a fun learning experience for all.

Our school library is undergoing a beautification process. However, you can still choose something to read. Contact our librarian lisa.payne@sanjuan.edu
She can leave a book in the office for you to pick up. Just because we have to social distance does not mean you can't still get a good book to read.
California Healthy Youth Act
Each year, in alignment with the California Healthy Youth Act, the San Juan Unified School District provides the opportunity for 7th or 8th grade students to receive instruction on comprehensive sexual health. Our district uses Teen Talk for Middle School as the curriculum for this unit. The instruction includes 12 lessons and will take place April 26 - May 21, 2021.Look for a message from the district with more information about the curriculum, including how to preview the materials and options you have for your child. Zoom Meeting are Very Important to Attend!
- There is a Live Session with the teacher at the beginning of each class period.
- Students need to log on correctly and use their correct names in order for attendance to be counted as present for that class.
- Students should have their cameras on and be ready to un-mute themselves to answer questions and participate as needed.
- We strongly encourage all students to use the video feature. This allows teachers to get to know the students and support the learning.
- Students will find all assignments in the google classroom
- Links to Zoom meeting are posted in each teacher's google classroom. You will find it on the banner. A link will also be in the Classwork.
- Be sure to answer any questions posted in the google classroom as they count towards participation and completed assignments.
