Youth Development Internship

The Carlow area has had above average unemployment figures in recent years and this has affected young people and their efforts to secure employment. The average youth unemployment rate in the region over the last twelve months has been higher when compared with the national figure of 26% in the same period.

The New Youth Developmental Internship (YDI) is one of many youth focused actions that Ireland has committed to delivering under the Irish Youth Guarantee. A YDI offers a young person, who has had little or no experience of working, the opportunity to learn basic work skills and social skills while on a placement in a real work situation.

The YDI is aimed at 18-24 year olds, who are signing on the live register and who have limited or no experience of work and in particular, those young people who would find it difficult to progress through candidate screening in a typical recruitment process. The objective is to provide young people with an opportunity to learn and develop various work skills and gain relevant workplace experience by Host Organisations offering an internship that would be for either 6 or 9 months in duration, for four days a week. The hours would be from 20 to 30 hours per week. Interns will also complete a work preparation course organised by DSP before they start the internship. As with JobBridge, there are no wage costs to the Host Organisation as the intern will retain their jobseeker payment and will get a €50 top up per week from the Department of Social Protection for the duration of the YDI.

See the brochure for further information or contact me at Bob.kirwan@welfare.ie. Employers are being asked to register their interest in offering a YDI placement by emailing ydi@welfare.ie.
