Structured Days -- Alternative to Suspension
You may have noticed that some of your students are getting a "Structured Day" as an alternative to ISS/OSS. We are finding this to be an effective disciplinary consequence that keeps students in the classroom.
We need your help to ensure that this consequence continues to have the desired effect!! If you have a student on Structured Day, please be sure to follow the outlined rules of his/her plan -- particularly, dismissing students 2-3 minutes AFTER the tardy bell has rung, contacting the office if a students is insistent on using the restroom, not allowing hall passes for locker visits, etc., and updating your substitute plans to include information about student(s) on structured days.
If you have questions about structured days, please see me, Ben or Nyesha!

Inside the Growing Push for Social and Emotional Learning in K-12 Education
Inside Philanthropy
Philanthropies funding education are talking more and more about social and emotional learning and other approaches that take the “whole child” into account. A growing body of research, grassroot demands, and the cultural moment have all contributed to the rise of these approaches, even though those terms can mean slightly different things to different people. At its core, social and emotional learning (SEL) emphasizes the soft skills kids need to succeed — skills like handling their emotions, feeling empathy for others, forming relationships and making responsible decisions. The approach hasn’t gotten as much attention as other trends in education, like the spread of personalized learning or early childhood learning, but social and emotional learning has caught the eye of some deep-pocketed backers, including deep-pocketed newcomers like the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Winter Conferences -- UPDATE
Sign-ups for conferences are quickly filling up!! If there are parents who have signed up, and you feel that there child is doing well and doesn't need a conference, please reach out to see if they'd still like to come in. Sometimes, a word from the teacher can help parents to make the determination, and it might free up slots for those parents that we need to see.
Also, incentivizing conferences for students can help to get parents in the bulding!!
NEW SCHOOL STORE HOURS
Our School Store has been up and running with the help of some great student employees and student managers! Every week, students may visit the store to spend their hard earned pendants that they receive in classes for being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, and SAFE. Due to the heavy volume of customers, the store will be open to students every Tuesday during Zero Period. We will also keep our normal Thursday hours.

PBIS Update
An additional tardy to the criteria for the 3rd Quarter Incentive. It is now the 4th tardy that will bump students down a tier.
Happy Friday!
Keeping the Lines of Communication Open
It is extremely important that we continue to communicate with parents about academics and behaviors (both positive and negative). We do not want report card time to be the first communication to parent's about their student's progress in your class.
I know that it is not always easy to communicate with home, but it is necessary. Check out the blog in the attached link for more tips on how to communicate with parents.
