Pajama Day and Read in

We will be having pajama day and a read in this Thursday. This is to celebrate our Fun Run goals that we reached. Your child may wear their pajamas to school (as long as they are appropriate) and may bring in a blanket and stuffed animal or pillow for our Read in. We will have our Read in on Thursday morning where students can find somewhere to read in the room. I will also provide a muffin snack during this time. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Curriculum this Week:

Reading- Our reading for 4th grade will change this week. Starting this week we will no longer be switching classes amongst 4th grade for reading. The entire school will be using the reading structure Daily 5 (that we have been using this year). We have realized that students are more successful with this structure when they are in their own homerooms. Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Math- We will continue our flexible math groups. This week we are focusing on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and word problems. It is important that all of our students not only know the algorithm of a 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problem but that they also understand how to show the problem in many different ways. Students should be able to show the problem using partial products, array models, algorithms, and repeated additions.

Science- This week we will be finishing our google presentations on North Carolina animal adaptations. We will also share our presentations with the class.

Social Studies- We will participate in a North Carolina mystery skype on Friday. We will be skyping with a 4th grade class somewhere in North Carolina. We will have to take what we have learned so far about North Carolina and ask questions to figure out where the class is located.

Reading- Fluency Practice

At this point in the school year, 4th grade students should be reading 105 words per minute. Below is a link that takes you to a website that has many below, on, and above grade level passages. To check your child's fluency you may have your child read the passage for 1 minute. When 1 minute is up you can count the words your child read. If you find your child is reading less than 105 words per minute you may wish to practice with your child a couple of times a week. It will also help your child to improve their fluency by rereading passages that they have already read. If you have any questions please let me know.

Genius Hour

Don't forget that we will be presenting our Genius Hour projects to the class before we are out for Thanksgiving Break. We have had a lot of time at school last week and will this week to work on these projects. Please let me know if you have any questions.
