Anxiety and Depression in Children and Adolescents
Children and adolescents are faced with challenges they are not used to. It's important that we recognize the signs of depression and anxiety in children and adolescents. If you recognize these signs in a young person in your life, get them help. Please contact the school counselors, Mrs. Burfield and or Mrs. Horstmeier or social worker, Josh Varner and we can assist you with resources in our community. FMS 590-8200.
ANXIETY
Being very afraid when away from parents (separation anxiety)
Being very worried about the future and about bad things happening (general anxiety)
Having repeated episodes of sudden, unexpected, intense fear that come with symptoms like heart pounding, trouble breathing, feeling dizzy, shaky or sweaty (panic disorder)
Anxiety call present physical symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, or stomachaches, and trouble sleeping
DEPRESSION
Having a hard time paying attention
Showing changes in energy-being tired and sluggish or tense and restless a lot of the time
Showing changes in sleep and eating patterns
Feeling sad, hopeless or irritable alot of the time
Not wanting to do or enjoy doing fun things
Showing self injury and self destructive behavior
If you need to reach out to the school counselors even though you all are not in the building you can still make a submission on the FMS School Counseling referral form and we will be in touch with you.
Transition to 9th grade
FMS Counseling Department: Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier and Ms. Jo
Needing to see the school counselor?
Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by logging into classlink and clicking on the FMS Guidance Office Icon. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn about this form on Wednesday and Thursday through their PE classes when Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier and Mr. Varner come in to visit. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the icon in classlink, your teacher can send us a note. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be helped immediately. Our form is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time if the counselors are tied up in a meeting or helping another student.
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at cburfield@fulton58.org.
Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.

Hello!
Since we have moved to Virtual learning until November 30th, it's a little more difficult to get books delivered to you! So, I have made a form for you to fill out if you would like to come by and pick up a book from our school. The form can be found in the Virtual Library below. Please use the FMS Library link to search for books.
https://fmsmo.goalexandria.com/
If you would like your own Daniel Boone Regional Library card, you can print an application from the DBRL website: https://www.dbrl.org/using-the-library/library-card-faqs/how-do-i-get-a-library-card
The DBRL card gets you access to Hoopla! Hoopla is an amazing app that allows you to check out books from the DBRL online. They have books, audiobooks, comics, music, movies, and more!
