A Note From the Principal
Hello Wabash Community!
Here comes March! Spring is right around the corner! Warmer weather and sunshine will be here soon enough. In the meantime, please remember to send your child with coats, gloves and hats for outside recess. We do continue to go outside for recess during the colder months. If you need assistance with acquiring a winter coat, please contact Mrs. Pousson at extension 50241.
Our 3rd quarter report cards will be emailed out on April 1.
Please be aware that students may not be dropped off for school before 8:20 am in the morning, unless they are in a club or the Chautauqua Program. Staff are not on duty prior to 8:20 am in the morning. Thank you for your help with this!
I wanted to also remind you that Wabash continues to use the Choose Love Program to support the development of our students' social and emotional developmental needs. The Choose Love Program places added focus on four key life lessons/skills: Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion in Action.
This link below will take you to the Choose Love Home Program, which has a free parent tool kit. You have to create an account to access the Home Program Resources and Parent Toolkit. On my end, I have an account. I have found that I get a monthly newsletter emailed my way, but beyond that I am not bombarded with spam or junk mail as a result of having a Choose Love account.

Updated Safety Measures
Part of keeping students and staff safe is knowing who is in our building at all times, so we have rolled out a system to allow us to do just that. WSD visitors will check in to our buildings using Raptor, a new visitor management system designed to assist with building security.
What does that mean for you?
When you arrive in a WSD building as a visitor, you will be asked to scan your ID, take a photo and complete the management system’s check-in process.
Raptor will screen the information against sex offender databases and locally customized lists of banned or potentially threatening individuals, instantly alert school officials to a threatening presence, and maintain a searchable log of all visitors.
Once approved, you will get a customized visitor badge to wear while in the building.
Thank you for your support as we roll this out and enhance school safety protocols!
Parents or guardians who are only picking up a child for the day will not need to use the visitor management system.
Kindergarten Screening and Registration
Dates have been set for the Wentzville School District’s kindergarten screening process. This event is for all children who will turn five BEFORE August 1, 2022.
Parents are asked to register online using the Quick Registration and Screening form. If your child has not been screened at the Parents as Teachers office or his/her preschool this year, appointments are required and can be made when you register online.
Screening appointments are available in the morning and evening and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be sure to check your address with the District’s Boundary Locator tool to determine which school your child will attend before registering your child for kindergarten.
All screening appointments will occur at the Parents as Teachers Office at One Campus Drive, Wentzville, MO 63385.
Your information will be sent to your child’s elementary school. The school will contact you to complete your child's kindergarten registration. To access a list of necessary materials and documents for registration, please visit the District website. For additional information about kindergarten registration and screening, or to check if your child has a current screening on file, please contact the Parents as Teachers Office at 636-327-3863, ext. 22281.
If you do not have a Missouri birth certificate, you may obtain one for $15 from the St. Charles County Community Health/Environment-Vital Statistics Office, 1650 Boone’s Lick, St. Charles, MO 63301, or by calling (636) 949-7558 for more information.

MAP Testing
Spring is just around the corner and that also signifies our window for MAP.
The dates for 2022 MAP testing are:
May 9-13 3rd & 6th grade
May 16-20 4th & 5th grade
If possible please try to avoid scheduling medical and dental appointments during your child’s applicable MAP window.
Reassure your child that he or she does not have to answer all the questions correctly to pass. It is not expected that students answer every question correctly. There is always room for error. Knowing that they do not have to be perfect will help eliminate some of the stress that comes with testing.
Tell your child to attempt to answer all of the questions and not to leave any blank. There is no penalty for guessing, and students can get partial credit on the open-ended items. Teach them to eliminate ones that they know are wrong first because it gives them a higher chance of getting the correct answer if they are forced to guess.
Remind your child that the test is important. It sounds simple, but many parents fail to reiterate this. Most children will put forth their best effort when they know it is important to their parents.
Explain to your child the importance of using time wisely. If your child gets stuck on a question, encourage him or her to make the best guess or place a mark next to the item and go back to it after finishing that section of the test. Students must not spend too much time on a single question. Give your best attempt and move on.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Is Your Child Bored?
Kids love to be busy… playing, watching movies, gaming and yes, even learning. However, in today’s world, a sometimes challenging occurrence could actually be when they are bored, as in experiencing simple “good old-fashioned” boredom.
I’m referring mainly to the kind of boredom arising from routine situations such as when a parent or guardian has set limits on screen time, a car ride that lasts more than a few minutes or a long wait at a restaurant. These are situations where a child has adequate supervision but is struggling to occupy their time well. If your child complains of being “bored” here are some tips that may help:
How do you, yourself, view the situation when the child exhibits the behavior(s)? Are there activities available but your child only feels like one singular activity, such as screen time, can satisfy them? Or, has your child genuinely exhausted all available activities at hand? Sometimes we can spot when a child has simply overlooked a healthy outlet of activity.
Try, as best you can, to be ready with a general alternate activity, such as a craft or a blank drawing tablet where your child can create and navigate through their boredom.
Realize that, even though it is sometimes frustrating or challenging, being “bored” can also foster resilience and “grit” in your child. Paraphrasing from a recent article entitled “The Benefits of Boredom” by licensed therapist Tony Tramelli of West County Psychological Associates, it can inspire new activities such as picking up a musical instrument or reading for pleasure. Boredom can also help a child who may feel overwhelmed with their weekly schedule to feel some calm and help them work through not being constantly entertained or busy.
Lastly, assuming your child(ren) are adequately supervised, you may also give yourself permission to allow them to be bored. Your guidance and example in these situations can help your child discover new avenues of thinking and contribute to the overall health of your child.

LATE START SUPERVISION
The WSD will once again be providing supervision for K-6 students who need to be dropped off at the regular start time on scheduled Late Start Days in the 2020-2021 school year. This is separate from our Before Care Program through Chautauqua, so if you are registered for Chautauqua, please DO NOT register for Late Start Supervision.
The fee is $10 per child for each late start day you would like to register for. Please fill out the REGISTRATION FORM first prior to paying. If you choose to use PayPal, there is a sliding scale charge assessed to cover processing costs. You also have the option to send a check in to your child's school. In order to arrange for adequate staffing, you must register and pay before the deadline for each late start day (deadline is one week prior to each late start). You may also register for all late start dates one time by choosing the dates you need in the registration form.
Future Late Start Dates:
