January 18, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Hola familias de Woodcrest,
Dear families,
January can feel dark and dreary, but there are many points of light happening at Woodcrest. As I walk through the hallways and visit classrooms, I see so many smiling faces and lots of learning going on. Please check out our Facebook feed to see photos of some of the wonderful learning that is happening at Woodcrest.
We have two events at Woodcrest next week and I hope you can join us:
On Tuesday, January 24, we will have Coffee with the Principal starting at 9:15 a.m. The focus of the discussion will be on equity.
On Friday, January 27, we have a curriculum and family night. The evening will begin with curricular activities with some of our teachers at 5 p.m. and will continue with PTO sponsored STEM activities, 6-7:30 p.m. Food will be available for purchase after 6 p.m. Please see below for more information.
In addition to our Woodcrest events, this is also the time of year when we have many events and opportunities focused on enrollment, registration and grade level transitions across our Spring Lake Park Schools. Please take a moment to review the upcoming opportunities in today’s newsletter. If your child is gearing up for a big transition, please know that we are here to make it smooth.
The Panther Foundation has a big event coming up in February - the Panthers for a Purpose giving week. The week of giving is Feb. 19-25 and concludes with a big party on Saturday, February 25. It’s a great week of coming together for a good cause! Mark your calendars!
Be well,
Fourth Grade Families: Introduction to Westwood
When students finish fourth grade at Spring Lake Park elementary schools, they transition to 5th grade at Westwood Intermediate School. Now is the time to get to know Westwood and prepare for next year.
Families of fourth graders are invited to attend a virtual Introduction to Westwood session on Thursday, January 26 and/or an in-person event on Thursday, February 2 to learn more about the school, the transition to 5th grade and to meet members of the Westwood team.
Attend a virtual session Thursday, January 26:
January 26, Coffee and Conversations, 9 a.m. | General WebEx Link | Spanish Immersion WebEx Link
January 26, Lunch and Learn, 1 p.m. | General WebEx Link | Spanish Immersion WebEx Link
January 26, Dessert and Discuss, 6 p.m. | General WebEx Link | Spanish Immersion WebEx Link
The content of each presentation will be the same so families only need to attend one session. If you're not able to make any of these sessions, there will also be a recorded presentation available to families after these sessions with the same great information.
Attend the Westwood Welcome Thursday, February 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Fourth grade students and their families will have an opportunity to visit Westwood in-person on February 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Attendees will participate in several topic-specific, small group information sessions, dive into common parent questions and tour the building.
Community Event — Jan. 26: Kate Gladdin, Resiliency Speaker
Don't forget to mark your calendar to hear Resiliency Speaker Kate Gladdin share her message on Thursday, January 26 at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center at Spring Lake Park School. The talk will be paired with a health fair at Spring Lake Park High School in the Rotunda where families can learn about community resources.
Kate is a speaker and coach who specializes in uplifting teens and developing their resiliency. Her talks help reduce student anxiety by teaching the power of ''response-ability'' which is the ability to choose a response to any situation based on your perspective of it.
Through Kate's talk, attendees will learn how to:
- Recognize the impact of negative thoughts and self-talk
- Understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and reactions
- Use a simple 3-step strategy to quickly change unhelpful thought
- Identify sneaky negative beliefs and transform them
- Develop a growth mindset during times of adversity

¡Los estudiantes de Woodcrest se han estado divirtiendo con la nieve durante receso!
Students have been enjoying the snow during recess time. Here we have some students from Sra. Ramirez' fourth grade class having lots of fun!
Coffee with the Principal
The next Coffee with the Principal is scheduled for 9:15-10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 24. Free coffee and treats will be provided while parents meet with Principal Nymann for a small discussion on equity.
Free STEM Family Night
PTO is excited to host a free STEM family night on Friday, January 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. Families should plan to explore hands-on activity stations and enjoy interactive presentations as they join us for a Carnival of Engineering.
Step right up to explore engineering and technology! Experience a school carnival in a whole new way as the Science Museum of MN puts an engineering twist on traditional carnival games. Activity stations may include a reimagined frog flinger, cantilever building challenge, flinkers, the hand crane game, giant slide, and rollercoasters in a tube.
Staff from Woodcrest will also present the second night in their series about our school curriculum.
We need 15-30 volunteers to monitor tables set up by the Science Museum and help with food sales. If you can help, please sign up as soon as possible so we know we have enough coverage to go forward with planning. If you have a grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin, or high school student who can help, we can get them signed up as well!
