I Make a Difference
From Rufino Bioc
I would like to pass the I Make a Difference Award to my friend and colleague, Katie Bennett. She is friendly and easy to get along with. Every day Mrs. Bennett makes sure to greet students and staff members with a smile and hello. Students in her classroom are the focus when she is teaching. Every time I see her, she goes above and beyond to help a student or staff member. It is my great pleasure to pass the I Make a Difference recognition to Katie Bennett.
AP Testing Information
AP Testing begins on May 6th through May 17th. Please see the full schedule below. We will be testing at LHS on Monday and Tuesday, May 6th and 7th, and then students will be testing at the VB Convention Center. Please note that we will be running buses to the Convention Center leaving LHS at 7:15 am and 11:20 am. On test days, students are excused from school before or after testing, although some students may elect to attend classes. A big thank you goes out to all of our AWESOME AP teachers who have prepared their kids for these important tests! Best wishes to all.
Progress Reports
Progress report card grades for the fourth quarter are due no later than Wednesday, May 8th at 12:00 pm. Please use this link to access the directions for posting grades for the fourth marking period. Teachers should have at least one meaningful grade per week. Please be sure to use the comment options on the report cards as a means for communicating and sharing additional information with the parent/guardian. In addition to using the comment options, please make contact with parents of students who are failing. Early and continued proactive communication on our part helps gain the support and involvement of parents.
Important dates:
- Grades may be posted by teachers beginning Monday, May 6th – Wednesday, May 8th. Start early to avoid potential issues with Synergy.
- Grades will be due by Wednesday, May 8th at 12:00 pm.
- Distribute progress reports during your 2A class on Friday, May 10th.
- You may begin entering grades again on Thursday, May 9th.
- Our next and last parent-teacher conference is Wednesday, May 15th. (Remember—If you set up a parent conference yourself, make sure you complete the online form and that have discussed the date and time with the parent and they are available.)
Need help?
- Transfer grades for new students should be put in within a week of their arrival to your class. When posting grades, you cannot have any missing grades. If you need a grade for a student, contact the previous teacher (if within LHS) or the counselor (if from a different school, division, etc).
- If a student is auditing your class, a grade still needs to be entered.
- See Mrs. Sanderlin, Mr. Moore, or Mrs. Burgess for specific gradebook questions.

Chromebook Collection & Inventory
As the school year comes to a close, please note the following information related to Chromebooks:
- Any damage to Chromebooks such as broken screens, missing keys, etc. should be repaired prior to SOL testing. Have students take any damaged equipment to the TST (Mr. McCollum) so it can be replaced.
- The school store sells replacement chargers for $20.00
- We will collect Chromebooks from seniors from Tuesday, May 28 through Thursday, May 30 in room 233.
- Students in Grades 9, 10 & 11 will keep their Chromebooks over the summer. They will be checked by their English teachers with a check sheet provided to them. They will ensure students have their correct Chromebook and make sure it remains in good condition.
- During the summer, any damaged devices can be brought to the TST for repair.

PTSA Board Needs Our Help: YOUR PTSA Board needs folks to step up to fill positions on the board for the 2019-2020 school year. Please contact Missy Dunaway at midheels@aol.com if you know of any parents who might like to become more involved or would like more information. We need the Eagle Nation to benefit from a strong PTSA and our seniors to get the All Night Grad party they deserve
Items Needed for Graduation: We are in need of men's ties, dress shoes, and pants for our students for graduation. We could also use ladies flat shoes. These items can be used or new. If you are willing to donate, you can drop items off in Room 136 or in Dave Siock's office.
Graduation Time Change: As you may have seen in the recent press release, several graduation times have been changed including ours. Our graduation is now Saturday, June 15 at 6 p.m. The change was necessary because of the construction of the new athletic complex which eliminated most of the parking for the Convention Center. Stay tuned for more details on how parking will be accommodated.
End-of-Year Social Event: The Sunshine Committee is starting to plan our final social event of the school year and they need info. If you are interested in a social gathering after the graduation ceremony on June 15, please complete this Google Form. The committee needs an idea of how many people to accommodate as they select a venue. Please complete the form by Wednesday, May 1.
DATE CHANGE!! Heritage Week Committee: If you are interested in working on Heritage Week for the 2019-2020 school year, please come to a meeting on Wednesday, May 8 at 2:20 in the ECC. 2019-2020 Professional Learning Program Information
Kudos
Congratulations to our SCA for earning the prestigious National Gold Council of Excellence Award from the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). This award recognizes student councils for their records of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community.
Kudos to LHS for being named in the top 100 schools in Virginia by U.S. News and World Report.
Kudos to Ty Swartz and the LHS Underwater Robotics Team. They had many extremely complex challenges that they were able to overcome successfully during their recent competition. While they didn't take first place, they made a strong showing and learned a great deal from the experience. Team members included: Cole Reibel, Amanda Morgan, Brice Zimmerman, Savannah Doss, and Harold Scholten. This team went to elementary schools and discussed the reason to build Underwater ROV's and talked about the importance of STEM and learning how to solve problems as a team.
Virginia Beach Digital Campus Summer Courses
Registration and payment processes for online summer school courses provided through Virginia Beach Digital Campus (VBDC) can be accessed through a link on the Distance Learning website (https://www.vbschools.com/academic_programs/distance_learning ). Registration and payment for online summer school courses begins May 1 at noon. Registration will continue until sections are filled or until June 20 at noon. Information about summer school course offerings and processes has been available on the site since April 3.
Before families register students for online summer school courses, VBDC recommends that students consult with home school counselors about the appropriateness of their academic plan. In addition, the Distance Learning website offers Frequently Asked Question about the experience of online learning including a new program, the Student Online Assessment of Readiness (S.O.A.R.). This free assessment will help families decide if the student has the skills and dispositions necessary for fully online coursework. Results of the S.O.A.R. are private and are linked to a free Schoology course in which students can work to develop the necessary skills.
Start Preparing for Next School Year with Schoology PL On Your Own Time and At Your Own Pace
Are you ready to start using Schoology with all of your classes next school year? While many of you have already made the leap from Google Classroom to Schoology this school year, as a school and a division, we will all be making that leap beginning in the 2019-2020 school year.
To help prepare you for this transition, Krissy and Erik have created Schoology Learning Boards full of tutorials and resources on a plethora of features that you will likely use within Schoology. They have created three boards that align with the categories established by the VBCPS Navigational Markers: Toes in the Water, Waist-High, and All In, terms used to depict comfort levels with Schoology.
Between now and May 31, you should review all three learning boards, beginning with the Toes in the Water board. When you feel comfortable with all of the features on this learning board, you should complete the required exit ticket reflection to earn 2 PL points and also gain access to the next learning board. Then, repeat that process, working through the next level boards completing each required exit ticket when you are comfortable with the features. You can earn up to 6 PL points, 2 per learning board. Please be honest about your abilities and in your reflection, as this will help us to create more effective Schoology training that meets everyone where they are and provide the support needed to make this transition. If you have any questions, get in touch with Krissy, Erik or one of our stellar Schoology Champions.
