Attendance, Rest, and Caring Adults
Back to School
Update
The building is looking great! We are excited for the students to be back in a few short weeks. Each day there are few more teachers in the building working and preparing for the up coming year. The teachers do not officially start back until August 16th. The secretaries, counselor, assistant principal, activities director, and technology coordinator are officially back if you need to get a hold of one of them.
As we get ready for the year we want to encourage all students in the following areas:
1) Attendance! Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. An estimated 5 million to 7.5 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
We also understand that there are variety of reasons that a student might miss school due to health related concern or in some cases transportation challenges. If you need help or support in these areas, please let us know because success at school matters.
If you know your student is going to be going to be absent, please contact Mrs. Tammy Zumbehl at (573) 491-3700 ext. 1301 or email her at tzumbehl@nb.k12.mo.us. You are able to keep track of your students attendance through Lumen parent portal as well.
2) Rest! Sleep boost your immune system. Sleep helps improve your muscle memory. Sleep restores and energizes the body. Sleep stimulates critical thinking and creativity. Sleep helps students stay mentally and emotionally fit. Sleep improves concentration and productivity in all areas of life. I have provided a list of a few ways to help your student sleep better.
Encourage physical activity instead of screen time after school
Keep devices off the bed
Keep TV's out of your students bedroom
Minimize screen time right before bed
Establish a bedtime routine
Spend quality time together as a family
Model healthy sleeping habits
3) Parent/Guardian/Caring Adult you make a difference:
When a caring adult are involved, students take more responsibility for their learning and accountability is heightened. Communication improves within the family when children reach out for help. Engagement can strengthen the adult-student relationship: knowing your student’s grades and assignments is an easy starting point to open dialogue for discussing progress, offering advice, working on projects together, or, hopefully, giving congratulations.
Students with adults who are involved in their school have fewer behavioral problems and better academic performance, and are more likely to complete high school than students who have no adult involved in their school.
Students with involved adults, no matter what their income or background, are more likely to earn higher grades and test scores, enroll in higher-level programs, be promoted, pass their classes, earn credits, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and graduate and go on to postsecondary education.
We say, "Thank you" at NBHS for all you do!
We look forward to seeing you and your students at open house on August 16, 2018 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. School starts back on August 21st!!!
