A MESSAGE FROM MR. LUNSFORD

Hello Jag Band Family!

Well, it seems as though summer is in full swing. I hope everyone is enjoying some quality time with friends and loved ones. As we continue to navigate through these uncertain times, I encourage you to take a deep breath and embrace the moment. It is not very often we are able to pause the daily grind and have time to reflect, but I will say, for me and my family, it has been a blessing.

As you may know, we recently welcomed our newest Jag, Oliver Charles Lunsford. We are LOVING the addition to our family (minus the crying, fussing, sleepless nights, slightly jealous toddler, etc.), and appreciate all the support and kindness many of you have extended to us. He can't wait to see the Jag Band in action and neither can we!

Students, please continue to submit those SmartMusic objectives. It sure is going to help us be prepared to move forward into the unknown. Our student leadership team will be attending a virtual leadership training workshop on July 7th and 8th. We are excited to have Mr. Dan Morrison, Director of Bands, San Antonio Reagan High School, work with our leaders on a program called OVERCOMING. This will prepare them for the upcoming year, and, hopefully, help shape our band program. And now...what you all want to know most...WHAT NEXT?!?!

Currently, we are waiting on word from TEA, UIL and Hays CISD about what the future will look like. As of now, we just don’t know. As soon as we get guidance, we will send out everything you will need to know via Charms, Remind and social media. Until then...EMBRACE THE MOMENT!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR BAND BOOSTER VICE-PRESIDENT FOR FUNDRAISING

Hello Band Family!

I am the Band Boosters VP of Fundraising and I am so excited about serving in this position this year. Last year I served as the Spirit Gear Committee Chair as well as working on the Newsletter and helped out our amazing Pit Crew! My son, Hugo, is a Junior who plays the french horn and I also have a 7th-grade trumpet player at Dahlstrom Middle School.

Allow me to explain a little bit about fundraising. Mr. Lucita and the Johnson Band are allowed to have two fundraisers per year. The Johnson Band Boosters (JBB) are not limited by how much fundraising we can do and we do our best to raise funds that can be used to supplement the Johnson Band funds. The funds that we raise support bringing in expert assistants to work with the students, providing first aid support at events and practices, purchasing props for our marching show, and various other expenses. It is important to note that being a new school, funding guidelines stipulate that the band program receives 3/4 of the funding from the district budget because we only have three grades at this point (last year we received half because we had two grades). These guidelines make sense because we have a smaller school population, however, we put on 100% of a show and we compete with schools receiving full funding from their districts. As the band program grows, it is important that the JBB fill as many funding gaps as we can.

This upcoming year we plan to raise funds by selling merchandise, selling ads in the Football Programs, securing business sponsorships, and hosting events like the 2nd Annual Jaguar Jog, the Band Bash and a Texas Color Guard Circuit competition. We are always looking for great ideas for raising funds so if you have any, please reach out to us!

We sell merchandise in two different ways: we work with TMF, an online merchandise vendor that hosts "stores" you can shop at and items will be delivered straight to your homes. We also buy certain items in bulk and sell them on our website and in person at events. We currently have an online TMF store open that will close on July 8th. Items purchased will ship three weeks after the store closes. Please see flyer below. All items sold by Spirit Gear Committee are always optional, however, the ONE item returning band parents highly recommend new band (not Guard) students purchase is the BAND DUFFEL. The band duffel is VERY useful during marching and competition when students are responsible for bringing their Summer Band Uniform to school. Our son keeps all of his band items in this duffel so he isn't looking for items at the last minute! This duffel can be used throughout your student's band years as we will not change the design and it will have your student's name embroidered on it.

While things are very uncertain right now and we are waiting for guidance on what band will look like this year, I look forward to meeting all of our new band families and any returning families I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet! We invite every family to find a way to be involved in the Jaguar Band Boosters and I would love to be able to help you find a great fit within the JBB. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you might have. Please know that the JBB is doing our best to provide all of our information in both English and Spanish to better serve all of our families. Any parents who are more comfortable with Spanish, please reach out to me and I or another Spanish speaking parent will be happy to help you.

Have a wonderful week and stay safe!
