Tuition based preschool classes are not filled as a "first come-first serve" program until after March 5th. Registrations will be accepted from in district families only from February 15 - March 5th. During the week of March 8th, we will place all registered students into a preschool class. Most children are placed in their first choice of sessions, however, sometimes we need to place students into their second preference session. Once our three week registration for in district families is complete, registrations for out of district families will be accepted for remaining spots and are available on a first come-first served basis.

Young 5's or Kindergarten Registration
Young 5's and Kindergarten registration began February 15th. Registration packets with forms to fill out are available in our office during normal business hours. There are specific instructions - changed from previous years - on how to complete in person and online enrollment. New this year at WUS, we have a district registrar. All registrations Y5’s-12th Grade will be handled directly through the registrar and the WUS Administration office.
Parents will need to sign up for a screening time when they pick up the packet at Dorr Elementary. Screenings will take place on April 28th and 30th. If your child is currently enrolled in our preschool program, he/she will be screened in class and will not need to sign up for a time. Only those who do not currently attend preschool at Dorr Elementary will need to sign up for a screening.
AGE REQUIREMENTS
At WUS, your child is eligible to enroll in our Young 5’s program for the 2021/2022 school year, based on their age. WUS will screen all incoming students in the spring and at that time the teacher will recommend if they believe the child is ready for school. There are several things the teacher will look for; academics is only a small part of the screening process. September 1st is the State of Michigan cutoff date for a child to attend Kindergarten. Wayland Union Schools follow that State guideline.
WHAT IS YOUNG 5’S
Young 5's IS “regular” school. It is NOT a preschool. The students enrolled in this program attend school all day, every day, five days a week. They ride the bus, eat lunch at school and attend all the specials classes; gym, music, art, library & media class. They also receive trimester report cards that will be part of their permanent file.
OUT OF DISTRICT STUDENTS
Families can apply for Schools of Choice (SofC), however, there are no guarantees on acceptance. Families will not be informed until August if their child has been accepted into the WUS district. SofC acceptance is based on how many students in the WUS district enroll and how much room is available in our classrooms. SofC is also based on what district you are coming from: In Allegan County or Out of Allegan County. We encourage all families applying for SofC to also enroll in their home district in case they are not accepted by WUS.
