Leveraging Digital tools to increase Reading, Writing, and Rigor in the Physical Education Classroom
While conventional wisdom holds that a tandem focus on diet and exercise is essential to health, recent polemic discussion in the fitness universe has challenged these norms. Sophomores in Coach Vince Brown’s PE Class will be tackling the debate; is exercise the driving factor of human health or is diet the route to maintaining a healthy body?
Utilizing a digital workflow via Google Classroom, students will launch into Actively Learn where they can interact with the anchor text, “The Conversation”. Students can then extend to other texts, scholarly journals, and websites (Curated for them by Coach Brown and embedded in their AL activity) that will inform Claim Evidence Reasoning (CER) written arguments. These CERs are aimed at supporting academic rigor and bringing writing into the formative assessment mix in the PE environment. This process also supports the FHS Site-Wide Writing Goal.
Coach Brown is excited about the teacher powers a tool like Actively Learn gives him. His class has used AL as a reading accountability piece for the course syllabus and used the platform to build a football vocabulary quiz - a formative assessment in support of their first PE unit; Flag Football. In a large class of 55-70 students, the easy grading and feedback function of AL allow for on-the-spot reading and writing supports, quick turnaround for teacher feedback on student writing, and revisions if work is in need of improvement.
Yale Visits FHS
Foothill High School Students welcome Yale to campus. Yale student ambassador, Serena Ly stopped by Mr. Hermanson’s classroom during lunch. Students were able to learn about campus life, financial aid, extra-curricular opportunities, and other questions students may have.
FHS Baseball and Marie Callendar's Team Up!
The Foothill Baseball team sold delicious Marie Callender’s Thanksgiving Pies for their annual fall fundraiser. Supporters were given the option to show their thanks by donating pies to our local Fire Stations 8 and 21, and the Tustin Police Department. The firefighters and police officers were very surprised and honored for the recognition. There was also the option of donating pies to Operation Warm Wishes (OWW), a local organization which helps those in need. OWW president TyRon Jackson served the pies to many grateful individuals and families at his ‘9th Annual OWW Thanksgiving Spectacular’ at Peppertree Park. Varsity baseball players EJ Wong and Connor McMahon, and Freshman baseball player Shane McMahon delivered the pies.
Another Amazing Knight
Students of the Year is a national seven-week challenge through which high school student leaders raise funds and awareness for the fight against blood cancers. The funds raised benefit the LLS mission: to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Last year, across the country, the program raised more than $6 million for blood cancer research, patient aid and community out reach programs. More than $52,000 was raised by three high school students in this chapter alone. Truly an elite group! Joey will be running in honor of his grandmother, who he lost to blood cancer.
Amazing John and Tim Gardner
OC Register, "Foothill High School senior John Gardner always wanted an electric-powered skateboard but thought the $1,500 price tag for each was too expensive. So the teen decided to build his own.
Gardner used computer-aided design programs to model the board, created the case for the battery using a 3D printer, and assembled the electronic components. Now he has a skateboard, which ended up costing less than a third of the retail price, that he can ride for up to an hour on a single charge.
Gardner, a student in the Foothill Engineering and Technology Pathway, demonstrated his skateboard Wednesday during the third annual OC Pathways Showcase with his brother Tim at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin."
