“Research consistently shows that when children have access to good libraries with plenty of good books and with adequate staffing, they read more, and thus do better on reading tests. For children of poverty, libraries are typically the only possible source of reading material.” Krashen, Stephen. 2004. The Power of Reading. Nevermoor Series
By Jessica Townsend
New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2017, 2018.
A delightful fantasy series for sure! If you like Harry Potter than you will love this series too! It is planned to be a nine-book series. Rumor has it perhaps a movie too!
Morrigan Crow lives with her father, step-mother and her grandmother. She was born on the eventide—a day that is said to be cursed. Not only is the day cursed but anyone who is born on that day is cursed and death shall come from the eve of their eleventh birthday. She is shunned by her family and society. It was rumored that everywhere Morrigan went, or anyone she might come in contact with, was doomed to death, or plague or something terrible. Morrigan was always on the outside and always lonely.
Then on the eve of her eleventh birthday a strange man appears out of no where and saves her as death was knocking on her door! Jupiter North smugglers her into the magical city of Nevermoor and tells her that she will be competing for a place in the Wunderous Society. So, she has to compete in four tough and dangerous trials (tests) against hundreds of other kids. Each kid has an extraordinary knack (power) that will draw the reader in. Unique powers such as, a mesmerist, one who has powers to persuade or change minds! Morrigan’s best friend Hawthorne can ride dragons. Morrigan just doesn’t know what her knack is and so this first book brings the reader through the first four trials and her enrollment into her classes for a chance to be in the Wunderous Society. Does it have parallels to Harry Potter—absolutely—the “cursed child,” a magical rail line, and very dark evil. But who cares since Jessica Townsend has created a unique and magical setting, with creative characters that come alive and evil that must be overcome? Morrigan has been called to that task!
