Principal's Letter
Dear Lake Windward Families,
We had a great first day back! Teachers focused on teaching routines and procedures as well as activities that help students get to know each other. During the first week our priority is to teach safety expectations as well as to start building relationships with each other.
I know safety is on all of our minds right now. Please know that we have safety procedures in place at LWE. For example, all of our exterior and interior doors remain locked throughout the school day. We regularly practice safety drills. This includes soft lock downs, hard lock downs, shelter drills (weather) and evacuation drills (fire). Our LWE staff is trained on each of these scenarios and we practice all of them during the first week of school with students. While we don't have a police officer specifically assigned to LWE full-time, Fulton Schools Police, as well as local municipalities, routinely patrol our campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Every stakeholder plays a part in making our school a safe place for students to learn and grow. I thank you in advance for partnering with us in this endeavor as safety is not always what is most convenient.
As previously communicated, breakfast and lunch is no longer provided to students free of charge. Please see the information below regarding how to set up a meal account for your child if you plan for your child to eat the school provided breakfast and/or lunch. Families experiencing financial hardship can fill out paperwork to apply for free or reduced meals.
As with the start of every school year, we are watching our enrollment numbers. If our enrollment numbers increase, we could be allocated additional teacher positions. I am especially watching our numbers in first and second grades during the district's 10 Day Count process.
I look forward to a great year of learning and growing! Thank you for your continued support. Please be sure to see all the information included below in this week's newsletter. Hang in there, as it is a lot of information! :)
Warm regards,
Julie Morris

Fulton County Code of Conduct
Greetings Parents, Guardians and Students,
We are super excited to support our students and staff as they return for another school year! As we all work together to ensure a safe and nurturing learning environment for our students, it is important that every parent/guardian and student is provided with a copy of the District’s Student Code of Conduct.
Starting on July 27, 2022, parents and students will be able to sign for receipt of the Student Code of Conduct using our new digital signature process. The link below contains a step-by-step “how to” guide for completing the digital signature process.
How to...Parent & Student Code Receipt

FCS ELA Update
Fulton County Schools is committed to ensuring that all students are able to read on grade level. In order to meet this goal, teachers are participating in LETRS professional learning and increasing instructional practices around the science of reading.
There are a few structural changes that you will notice as we continue to improve. First, the amount of time that your student spends in Reading/English Language Arts has increased. Students in kindergarten to second grade will spend 145-160 minutes focused on literacy. Students in third to fifth grade will spend 130—135 minutes focused on literacy. The literacy block will focus on the five pillars of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Second, students will receive grades for the Reading/English Language Arts through a single language arts course.
