Media Monthly
for middle school families!
Hi Parents!
Can you believe we are so close to the end of the year already? Well, here we are, looking for ways to keep our kids busy this summer. I've got some book suggestions I think your middle schooler might really like. Check them out below. None of the books below are Maud Hart Lovelace Nominees for next year, but if you want your kid to get started on reading those, here is the link to the list: Click here! We'll be doing another Voting Party next April, so its never a bad idea to start reading through the list!
Have a super summer...looking forward to seeing you in the fall once again!!
Have a super summer...looking forward to seeing you in the fall once again!!
For those who love a good mystery!
This is not a super high level book, but if your kid loves to solve puzzles, this one is fun. Good for both boys and girls and even gets them thinking about art! Part of a series, so the fun doesn't end when they finish this one! Blue Balliet is a great author.
Ready for an adventure?
If you liked the Percy Jackson series...this is your next book! The Cloak Society is an elite group of supervillians with amazing powers. Twelve-year-old Alex is a loyal part of the Society, but when he makes a "mistake" and save the life of one of the "Rangers of Justice", life takes an unusual turn. Part of a trilogy - read them all this summer!!
Be taken into a whole nuther world...
Jack is just like every other kid...except that he's gonna die. Soon. Unless...he can find the seven magic Loculi. Rick Riodan (author of the Percy Jackson series) calls this series a "high octane mix of modern adventure and ancient secrets". Not one to be missed!
Hilarious!
One of the best children's book authors out there...Kate Dicamillo has done it again. This book is about a girl who finds a squirrel with super powers. Weird, right? It is truly heartwarming, funny and just plain awesome. Flora's sarcasm (she is a natural born cynic, afterall) really makes the book.
One more for those who like funny!
This book not only made me laugh out loud several times, but deals with tough issues in a free flowing, easy kinda way. The main character lives on a reservation and decides ultimately to move to a high school off the rez. Although this book is not a hard read, it does have some language you might not like and some of the content might not be appropriate for all ages. Despite that - this is a fabulous book and a fabulous story based on the author's own growing up experiences.
For the girl in all of us...
Boys and girls alike will appreciate this book, but it is about relationships. John Green is a top author and this book is literally impossible to keep on our shelves. Hazel is a 16-year-old cancer survivor. She's been out of school for 3 years and her mom forces her into a support group so she can "make some new friends". For awhile, its just awful. But then...she meets Augustus. The movie is coming out this summer. Read it before you watch it!
The most amazing friends...
...can become your family. Willow is a 12-year-old genius, but tragedy strikes and her parents are gone. With no close family or friends around, Willow must rely on the girl she met just two weeks ago. Mai's family takes her in temporarily and Willow figures out what life is like without her parents. An incredible story about death, grieving and finding out how to move forward. But before you dismiss it as a sad and deep book - it is written with humor and ease. An excellent read!
Growing up in a theiving family has it perks...
but Katarina attempts to get out anyway. She wants a "normal" life. Is that too much to ask? Apparently, it is. An old friend (boyfriend?!) finds her and bring her back into the underground in order to save something very important to her. A fun summer read!
A Mounds View Author!!
"Remember who you are." That's what Milada's grandmother tells her the night the Nazi's invade her home. Written by a teacher from Valentine Hills, the story follows Milada's struggle through a difficult time in our world's history. Beautifully written!
Spring BOGO Book Fair a HUGE success at EW!
Just got the stats and WOW! You guys love to read. We made over $1,300 MORE than we did last year and that translates to 1,235 books in kids hands and the Scholastic folks tell me that equals about 222,000 minutes of reading! Yay! Thanks for coming out for it and for sending money with your kids! So excited about that. :)
We NEED you.
We really do.
We are so close the end of the year...we can almost touch it! But, if you have always dreamed of being surrounded by books (or if even if you just have an extra hour here and there), we'd love to have you be a library volunteer next year. There is an endless amount of tasks to be done, so keep us in mind next year! I'll send out more of these newsletters next fall, so you'll get your reminders! :)
